Hi,
my local transmission expert told me that there was an AMG version of this transmission. That would be a good upgrade if you could find one.

Myles,
I am not looking to swap transmissions, just incorporate any updates or upgrades from Mercedes on the transmission I am rebuilding.

Thanks

Bill,
I called Transtar per your post. It was a different ph#, but it was a transmission rebuild part center. They informed me that they have very little hard parts for the 722.3 Mercedes transmission. They do not have th updated B2 piston and I did not even ask about the rest.

Does anyone else know a source for these parts?

Thanks

You can get a stronger 4 speed made.....Steve can do it.....it is pricey, compared to a conventional rebuiild, but if you have big HP..it would be worth it

Hi

For what its worth on my S2 4 speed auto (1986) on hard launches with over 500 hp I was boiling the tranny fluid...well at least it smelt very burnt....I changed to a full synthetic and all is fine now,at least until my 1000 hp of Nitrous is fitted at end of this month....I will let you know then lol

So my best "upgrade" for you would be to change to synthetic fluid...

All the best Brett

Mike,
Re your post #21, try your local MB Dealer's spare parts department.

I got my B 2 piston, the latest upgrade model from them at half the price I would have paid at OPC.

Tails,
I called the dealer, they actually have the updated B2 servo piston in stock. It is $173.24. I also asked about the shift kit, P/N 55C011, but that was not a good number. Does anyone know who the manufacturer is for that part?

Maybe Steve Cattaneo will chime in since the P/Ns came from him and he is the resident expert on here. Steve...can you help us out??

Thanks

I had a conversation with Greg Brown about the strength of the auto box a while back.....and old rennlister who had the GTAR was very into drag racing...& designed his 928 for quick 0-60 times....it was an 89 S4 with lots of mods..with a 5.0L that dyno'd around 350whp.....I think he got his 0-60 in the low 4 range....

He had problems stripping ring-pinons.....due to the stresses of multiple drag launches....but that was before greg rebuilt it with the AMG parts......after that it was solid.....I think his rennlist name was pappy followed by a bunch of numbers...I think his name was steve pappin...try looking it up

Stock, the tranny is strong, and can be made better with some updated parts.
But if you want it as close to indestructable as is possible with whats out there, send it to Cattaneo, I know I will be with mine.
There's more to a megaton bomb proof tranny than a collection of upgraded parts, Steve's got the goods.

I am not building a stroker or putting a blower on it. The tranny does not need to indestructible for that reason. I am only asking about these parts since they are an update to the originals. I have to rebuild it for the clutches, so it was one of those WYAIT. Maybe some of these updated parts might make it shift better, or faster, whatever. If they are strictly only to strengthen the autobox for racing or whatever, it would probably be a waste of my money. Does anyone know the purpose of the updated B2 piston and the other updates Steve mentioned?
Thanks

I've only been to the 1/8mile drags a couple times in the 928 just to see how it would do.9.59 seconds in the 1/8th mile.I would think a good converter it would knock off a 1/2second as they leave too low.Does anyone make a higher stall torque converter or does any of the Mercedes auto transmission have stock converters that would interchange with a higher stall speed?I tried one link to manual valve body or updated valve bodies and it didn't work.Whats out there for more stall speed torque converters and how high would be ok without breaking other driveline parts.Sold my street strip car years ago because I wanted the 928.I was used to 3500rpm stall speed with a flash speed of 5200rpm in the old street strip car.I am not talking anything that wild just something around 2300 to 2500rpm when you leave the line. Now it seems 1800 to 2000.I think the car would turn better times if it left the line at a higher rpm.Anyone else out there do any drag racing as I have seen some of the 928 turbo cars with et times, wonder what their et slips are for the 60foot times,330 mark,1/8th mile also.
