Having recently done the S-to-GT Brake upgrade with my 17 y.o. neighbor gear-head-wannabe stopping in to regularly check the status (and drool!), he announced that he had ordered Brembo rotors and hvy duty pads for the worn out brakes for his Honda Del Sol....and....Would I help him install them.
We took a couple of hours this evening and knocked it out...
2 interesting things accomplished thru this "assist"...
-The ricer driver appreciates the Porsche driver and his/her willingness to help (his dad is hardly ever around, and I have assisted him with other automotive projects...nice kid!)
-The Porsche driver REALLY appreciates the power of Big Black 4-piston Brembos and those BIG A$$ rotors I have...compared to the single piston calipers and brake "rotorettes" on the Del Sol (tho - his car does weigh about 1/2 of what mine does!)
and - now the ricer stops on a dime!
I'm trying to get him to come to the next AX with me! We'll have him driving some German engineering before it's all over!!!

For now he'll have to settle for a Japanese car with Italian brakes. He'll need 5 point harnesses to keep him from flying thru the windshield when he stands on those Brembos.

Burning Brakes

I went to the GTS brakes in front on my car. The stopping power is phenominal
At the racetrack I can brake EXTREMELY late and still easily make the corner. I can do it lap after lap. It is a huge improvement over my 951. That car got a 100hp increase and the stock brakes were a little overwhelmed. I absolutely love having such endless reserves of fade free braking power. It is definatley one of the high points of any Porsche, ya gotta love the brakes.

Mark,
You are a terrific guy! And that kid will benefit from your willingness to volunteer your time. Bless you for being so kind. Now get over here and help me with my alignment! Doh!

Quite honestly, I don't understand the difference in stopping power between measily OB brakes and GTS brakes. You can lock your tires in both cases...only difference is heat dissipation capacity of the bigger brakes....which is only useful at the track where brake fading is more realistically possible than in the street...
So if you're a street racer who never gets brake fade, and updated to bigger brakes, you wasted your money AND increased the unsprung weight of your car
...but I could be wrong

But if you get bigger stickier tires you can hammer the brakes harder. I went from 78 stock brakes to "S" brakes and am very pleased. also put on S4 wheels and better tires. Next step is to start reducing total weight of the car. since I only tip the scales at 155lbs not much more room there.

Tarek - It's not just 'locking' up the tires...it is a matter of feel and finesse. THey probably won't make a big difference in regular street driving - but in AX and DE that are a HUGE advantage! I figure that the better brakes are good for atl lease 1.5-2 seconds off of an aprox 60 - 65 AX course.
One note - they are so sensitive...after driving the shark around - I have to make a conscious braking effort when I get into the SUV!
