Since Jay K coined the term OB (Old Bugger) and defined it as a 16 valve CIS 928, I've often seen modifications to the definition. The most frequent modified usage is that it includes all pre 32 valve 928's. In my opinion, this dilutes the definition. What if the term OB remain as the original definition and OB2 was used to define all 16 valve nonCIS 928's?

So to you an OB will be:
all 78-79
All Euro 80-83
Euro 84 non S

Some go by body style, meaning any 16V 928 without the S spoilers. So that could be up to model year 82. I don't like this idea since many have been modified over the years, spoilers have been added. My 79 has a front S spoiler to further confuse people. PCA Memorial weekend 2006 a group of PCA dressed people thought my 79 was a GTS. Figure that one out.

Personally all 16V's will always be "OB's" to me.

EDIT - ok, now I see the poll.......damn, option five is throwing me for a loop.

"OB is 16 valve CIS and OB2 is all other 16 valve"

Great, now the Star Wars Geeks (otherwise known as the 944 forum) will start buying earlier cars so they can walk around saying "I drive OB-1"

why also not include 85 and 86, as they are old body style? With the hood closed, you can't tell what the engine is in any event...

I think the original OB term was generally understood to be made up of '78 thru '80.

Over the years, the term seems to have evolved to encompass all 16V model years.

The original distinction (IIRC) was the OB's fuel system (CIS), cams (longer duration and lift for the CIS) and they were team built before the assembly line was implemented in 1980. Anyone want to crawl back through the Porschelist or early rennlist 928 emails to doublecheck?

The confusion generated by 'OB' will continue until most folks just use it to refer to any pre-S4. That day will arrive on approximately March 22, 2019.
Until then I will continue to use it only in reference to 'Old Bastid' which means Jim Bailey and anyone else over 80 that drives a 928.

Enzo, '84 Euro non S? I thought all ROW were S after '83 when the US went 4.7L.

Old Bugger now means anyone that's been around long enough to know OB originally referred to the US CIS cars, but has now been bastardized into "Old Body" style.

This has all the makings of a 'smoke' induced, late nite, college, solve all the
worlds' problems, BS sessions.
Though this is, perhaps, not as serious a problem as Cheney's brain worms, Bush's pickled brain or even the salad stuck in the gap in Connie Rice's teeth I realize there MUST be anchor points in the alternative world of the 928.
On the face of things I figured:
1. You were/are old and decrepit, worried about a failing heart and planning on using a WUR instead of a Jarvic III replacement pump.
2. You still had that old silver 'thing' and were hoping to be able to drive it during the daylight hours
without embarassment and shame, if not outright pride. To be honest with you I thought the RX 7 badges looked good on the old girl (OG) and no one in Oklahoma would notice anyway.
3. When Randy jumped in I remembered that once upon a time he had that poor old thing (OT) that had, alas, run under the goose-neck of a loaded 40 foot lowboy trailer and was cosmetically dolled-up to look similar to a convertible.
Actually, I was giving the 'issue' short schrift till I realized I was encamped with those who had bastardized the term. I spent some time contemplating about this problem - as well as my belly button lint - and for the good of the breed
I'm willing to be polled in favor of CIS equipped 4.5 L engined 928's as the OB's of the 928 family tree.
