In Car Camera
I remember reading a post just recently from someone you was trying out a new mini camera that could be velcroed to the rear view mirror. Believe they even discussed a group buy. I searched the forum with dozen different combinations and haven't been able to come up with it? Am I crazy? Anyone remember this thread?
Thanks!

The thread described a camera called a 'Hero Three' or' Hero 3' The group buy through Mark wasn't authorised by Rennlist since Mark isn't a sponsor. John D runs Rennlist as a Benevolent Dictatorship, and it's a business. Sponsors pay for the privelege of offereing things for sale, and subsidize our activites here. It costs serious money, time, and effort to keep the ship afloat, and the sponsors help make it all possible.
You can do a search on the camera name and find online sellers. One of the shoping sites shows Circuit City as a seller at $10 less than the us distributor sells them at retail, about the same $ that Mark was suggesting for a group buy price. Mark's deal was attractive because of avoided sales tax for me, but otherwise I can wander over to the local Circuit City store and get one if I choose not to wait for an online deal. Shipping and sales tax pretty much balance out here I suspect.
I have no financial interest in Circuit City or any other vendor of this product. Information is the same you might find shopping on the web, etc. I may or may not be a customer for this camera from this or another vendor, etc. YMMV, dealer sets actual price, yadda ^3

when the cameras are available from the manufacturer , Ill try and get some approval from John D to see if we can do the group buy again for the listers.
The availabiltiy of the camera seems to be in November, but the motorsports mouting kit will be available then too!

oh yes, we have that set up. It allowed me to put the video camera attaching to the rear view mirror.
the version available in NOV, will be either the waterproof wrist band or a motorsports attachement kit.

That may be true for portraits and still life photography, but the video from Marks car last week is one of the better in car videos I have seen. This is obviously not intended to replace the family camera.

The 'soft images' review was done on the rev 1 Hero camera, and is a review of the still images capability. The comparison is with a higher-features consumer cam that is much bigger. Consider that this is a special-interest camera, you'll be using it in video mode almost exclusively I'll speculate, and the iamge is therefore limited to 640x480 interlaced anyway. Remember ther's no digital viewfinder, no zoom, no significant bells and whistles at all. But three of them will fit in a cigarette pack too, and it will attach easily to the mirror. Nothing else to buy. If it gets loose in the car it isn't likely to damage you or the car, something the rollbar-mounted cams can't say.
I'm thinking that one is mounted at the rear edge middle of the sunroof opening, facing towards the dash and steering wheel, where it can also see braking movement. The other is mounted to the right and lower, so it can see forward and out past the mirror. There's so much tire junk flying around at track days that mounting one outside the car may not be that smart, but for fun drives the best forward shots are from outside the car for sure. Audio is trashed by the wind noise but the in-the-car camera audio will do nicely for that duty.
I'm looking forward to playing with them. Should be fun!

Here is the full quality video on his new beta video depository:

for the Youtube less bandwidth video:

the audio quality is not that great, but the video is better than my Mpeg'ing of the high 8 that used to take hours. now, its on youtube in a matter of minutes.
