Experience with RMB?
Hi Gretch,
I actually sold mine after a few months on my '87. To me, it sounded GREAT at idle and low RPM, but was just a bit too loud under hard acceleration for my tastes. Any perceptable performance was most likely due to weight savings, IMHO.

The RMB was a very nice addition to my shark. It dropped some weight(25lbs?), added a joyful sound that I prefer most days over radio drivel and CDs and added a couple of horsepower to boot. Too loud for some just right for me.

I was really worried about putting a RMB on my car. I didn't want that Hopped-up teenage Mustang or Camaro sound. That wouldn't be representative of the class and sophistication of this wonderful Automobile.
In my opinion the RMB added just enough of a rumble to catch your attention (Sweet music to my ears) and maintained a distinctive, exotic sound. It is hardly noticeable in the cabin at cruising speed, which makes for pleasurable highway driving. But, put your foot into it and that growl lets everyone know there is something special about THIS Porsche!

With the RMB, anyone who knows anything about cars won't make the mistake of thinking there is a four or even a six banger under the hood. I'm told that my GT makes the sweetest sound as it comes past the pit straight.
YMMV.
YMMV.
Gretch,
Had it on my '87S4. Thought the sound was just right - adds an edge to the exhaust note, but not at all intrusive. Doesn't at all approach rice rocket class (no offense to anyone).
Don't have it on my '89GT. Adding it to yours may be just the ticket though.

Hi Gretch,
You're going to love it. I had one on each of the last 3 928s I owned. Had one on the 89 S4 and then put another one on the 89 GT when I got it. Sounded best on the GT because of the smaller primary mufflers that are located ahead of the transaxle. I also have one on my GTS and its not quite as loud as I'd like it to be because the primary mufflers on the GTS are a bit larger.
Good luck.

I just put a RMB on my 87' S4 this week. It sounds like my co-worker's Corvette ZR-1 at idle and then it roars at higher RPMs. There also seems to be a touch more responsiveness to the throttle. Very nice overall.

Well my 91S4 has an RMB and it also has the GT 'resonators', don't do enough to call them mufflers !! Sounds great.
On the 87 I have RMB, the larger 87 resonators and the Louie Ott x-over, its a screamer and like Jay says at 4K its way cool. Best not to abuse too much around town though.
RMB is a true 928 bargain, it should have been delivered that way from the factory.

I guess i sort of have one. I had the rear muffler removed and a tip put on when i first got the car for only $40! Better deal than the rmb i think. It sounds good, thats what I am told. People who are jealous are like you porsche sounds like a chevy truck.
CHUCK-Z!!!
I am hurt. Really. Your old 89S4 5spd. that I have sounds JUST like the 89GT because it DOES have those smaller resonators - don't you remember?
Did you have the chome tipped RMB on the 89S4 when you had it? Chrome looks pretty good on black.
I still tell people this was Chuck Zachman's car!

Hi Brendan,
Didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Was/is a GREAT car! You're right about the muffler size. When I wrote the post, my mind was a little fuzzy about which it had. Guess the reason I didn't remember is, I had the GT when I bought the GTS and took the RMB off it and installed it on the GTS. I remember being a bit dissappointed because the GTS was so much quieter. Need to install the small mufflers or the cat bypass. BTW, the 1989 928 GT that I owned is also now in San Diego!
I had an all black RMB on your 89 S4 that I bought long before few people even knew what an RMB was. Got it from the guy that makes DR's RMB. He used to advertise in the back of Pano. He sent me pictures of his 90 S4 and assured me it wasn't to loud and said he drove it in NYC everyday. Later, I put on a RMB with polished tips.
The one I have on my GTS was made by a guy who makes headers for several NASCAR teams in the area. What an awesome piece this RMB is, it looks like art it’s built so well. Super high quality brushed stainless and a great fit! At around $300 it’s expensive but in my opinion worth it. Here’s a picture.
