Default What is the best way to ship car parts

I have a post selling Tires, Seats, Brakes, etc. Pretty much everything is sold but I'm having trouble with the shipping. What is the most economical way to ship these kind of articles across the country. The rates I'm being given are astronomical in my opinion. $400 to ship 4 tires / wheels, etc is outrageous.
I know a lot of you guys ship parts, how do you do it with a reasonable cost.
Any help would be appreciated.

Tim, I use Fedex ground for everything. For example, I just shipped a passenger seat to Texas, shipping was about $55. FYI, go to U-Haul and buy a wardrobe box for each seat (get the small wardrobe box). I've shipped wheels without tires for about $25 each.

Richard,
Fed ex ground is the one that gave me the $400 price on the tires / wheels to the east coast. There has to be a better way.
I have boxes for the seats. The Recaro seats I have in the beast came in perfect boxes so I have that covered.

Oil is $81+/barrel, the dollar has set 7 consecutive daily lows against the Euro.
Think about it.

On-line quote shows approx $50 each, from Ca to random place in Pa. If you package them in one box, there might be extra size and weight charges, so might be better to ship each wheel seperate.

I have heard that Greyhound has cheap shipping on large items, but I have never used them.

Or just load them in the back of the Beast, drive them to the east coast, and be back in time for dinner.

Wow. Tirerack sure gets a break from FedEx. FedEx Ground is usually cheaper than UPS. Greyhound is another good way for bulky parts. They will ship almost anything and generally very cheap, but they are not door-to-door. DHL can be very good too.

I think Fedex's online system is screwy right now, I'm having someone send me a 944 dash and he gave me the dimensions and weight so I can verify the $62 quote he gave me.
When I input everything it said around $400 to ship it......so I think their online system is screwy

I shipped a seat via greyhound a couple of years ago..wasn't too bad pricewise..but the buyer has to be willing to go to the bad part of town (usually where the bus stations are) to pick up what was shipped...

Good luck,
Tom

I ship via DHL, usually cheaper than UPS, and will pick up at the house.

I joined two wheels with tires to each other, face inwards with some protection between them. Of course these weren't concours wheels, but it has worked for me. Less than $100 for two pairs.

I print a pick ticket ,the guys in the warehouse pull it, pack it, determine the shipping cost ...Then I run the credit card and the parts just go away !!! But yes shipping costs are TERRIBLE !!
