Default How to drill a 5L crank like a chevy?

Okay, let's get it out on the table.

How do you drill a 5L crank to have it oil like a Chevy? And by this, I mean specifically where exactly does the new oil pathway start and end?

C'mon guys, someone needs to spill, we've got 928 motors at stake here.

Thanks for any and all input. (and a pic would be great!)

You have a big stogie in your mouth while you work the boring machine; & from time to time you go on strike.

Marton
As somebody else said, if you do a search then you will find pictures & diags &&
Myself i think drilling the crank like a Chevy is simply an act of faith; if you believe in it then do it.
I guess those stupid Porsche engineers never thought of this........

Well here's the thing Liz, I know the topic has been discussed, and I know many theories have been tossed about, even some instructional cutaways on "this is how it probably would be done", but I haven't found anything that isn't just theory. I have also seen pics of drilled cranks that were supposed to be drilled like a chevy, but really weren't. So, if you've got a pic of a 5L crank that is truly drilled like a chevy, (and not the pic of that 944 crank with an extra cross-drill in the #2 journal that seems to be floating around ) I'd like to see it.

Thanks man!

The oil path is actually all throughout the entire crank, and the regular holes are plugged up, and new ones drilled that would let the oil get out to the rods easier. Where? I don't know.

Is that truly the case? My understanding is that just the routing to the 2/6 was redrilled, not to all four rod journals. I'm not saying that you're not right, I just didn't think "drilling like a chevy" meant addressing the other three journals since they don't seem to have an apparent problem.

Where? I don't know.
I guess were are both miserably "search inept" .

This is a good topic and in need of current stuff. Maybe Dennis and Abby can chime in. Taylor is one source to modify crank oiling but I don't understand exactly what they do.

It is a faith thing. Just give somebody a few thousand bucks to drill your crank. Do not dig too deep into the rality; it will spoil the illusion, just enjoy the drilled crank.

Okay, what do you guys want to know? Its in front of me on the couch right now. I am home studying for my securities licenses, and I can take pics of whatever you want. Its a crank drilled by Taylor in Whitier, CA.

Is the centermain now drilled to feed any con rod journals?

Some pics would be great with something running through the oiling ports so we can see the pathways.

Also, how much $$ to get the work done?

It was 700 dollars from Taylor. I am loading pics now.

The sides of the rod journals all have something drilled into them, like drilling was done, and then filled in again.

It looks as though these holes were used to drill through the rod journals diagonally, down into where the oil hole is for the mains, thereby getting more oil into the rod journals. No additional holes were added into the rod journals.

The last one is a bad pic, but I am trying to get the camera to show that there is a hole going out sideways from the main oil hole in the main that obviously is connected to the rod journal pathways.

This is the main's oil hole. You can see another hole inside there where the rod journal was drilled through, all the way to THIS hole. Connecting it, and thereby giving a better path for the oil.

So to show with the original diagrams, and my pictures show where this is done.

Mine has the holes where the larger drill bits are, filled.
