Default Update on Supply--

Michelle just called to say that she was ordering a windshield for a non-SoCal owner for direct delivery at lunchtime, and found out that there are a 13 (now just a dozen) Sigla premium windshields at a distributor in Phoenix. For some reason, these didn't show up the first time when Pilkington searched their own system for them. So that's some good news for all of us!

As of 1pm 10-18 (today) PST, the national inventory is 4 in Anaheim, 4 in Ohio, and 12 in Phoenix unclaimed. Get 'em while they're hot!

Also-- according to my unofficial install timetable for Saturday, there may still be two opeings for install at the event. We may be able to help the installer a little with some of the prep and save a few minutes, and open the door for those who want one but haven't committed on the installation calendar on Saturday.

Also-also-- If you are planning on Saturday installation but can get here Friday afternoon, call Michelle and see if you can move up your install appointment. It will help you some since the hard set time on the urethane adhesive/sealant is 4 hours, and it can then set up while you are at the reception Friday evening at the hotel. Sunday morning intalls are a possibility she has mentioned, but that would limit the driving you can do for a few hours afterward as the adhesive sets up. Plan accordingly!

Had mine installed today at Sharktoberfest. Can't say enough good things about the people and the process. I have forgotten the name of the installer, but he was very good, very thorough and professional.

Car looks great (it's amazing what a new pair of sunglasses will do for an aging movie star) and the view from the cockpit is much better now.

Great job by Dan, Mark and everyone else involved in putting Sharktoberfest together again. It was good to see all the die hard fans again.

Hey Mike, great to see you again too. It's been a while, definitely too long! For those playing along at home, Mike is a charter member of the SoCal928 group, but unfortunately he's plagued with a work and travel schedule that keeps him from having all the fun he deserves.

The installers today were busy-busy-busy, but still managed to take care of everybody that stepped up for new glass. I think Michelle said that she has a few left here in California, but she's got a finger on the dozen remaiining in Phoenix for shipment to anybody that needs one.

There was a clarification on the uniinstalled price -- that's having the glass shipped to your installer. Michelle said that there's a $100 allowance for Gabe to do the installations locally here, so the remote-purchase price with no installation is only $265. You make arrangements with an installer local to you to actually put it in. John Veninger flew in from NJ to attend, and said he's thinking about having another one to put on the shelf at home, in addition to the one he had installed last week at home. Should give you an idea how good an opportunity this is. Call Michelle directly on Monday to make your arrangements for the last Sigla windshields we'll see for at least another year.

For those of you concerned about replacing your windshield which has an antennae with one that does not, my reception is just as good now as it was before so I don't see the need to come up with an alternative antennae.

Reading at the Pilkington website, they say that they sometimes buy other windshields in the market to keep in their own supply chain. Small markets like the 928 may not justify a regular manufacturing run for them. Our good fortune is that they were able to buy Sigla premium glass and get it to us at their own lower price.

It was great fun yesterday just watching the installer take out the old and install the new windshield.
They were only installing the SIGLA glass at Sharktoberfest. One thing I noticed on the SIGLA glass, was that there are no markings to indicate where the windshield was made.

I spoke to the installer and Michelle about the waviness of the China product. The installer said he had to deal with complaints about the glass from China a couple years ago, but those issues seem to be no longer a problem.

Availability of the 928 windshields depends on the color of the tint. The original "bronze" tint is no longer available from most vendors or the chinese.
The glass vendor I got mine from indictaed that the green tint is the only one reproduced anymore as demand for the bronze is so small it does justify a production run.
The late model cars (since about 84) have more demand and production can be justified.
So if you have an early car you will likely have to convert to the green tint if you need a windshield.

There is one in Ebay at this moment.
BIN is $1200.

Call Michelle ASAP if you might need one in the next 18 months.

May be an interesting little side money-maker, especially if I can talk Michelle into handling all the shipping. Just send the checks directly to me... No that won't work. Karen runs my bank account...

Note that the e-bay glass is in fact the hard-to-find antenna glass if it is for the 1986 as the seller describes. I also like his 'meet me at a freeway rest area and I'll hand it to you' method of delivery.

Maybe for $800 this isn't a bad deal either.

FWIW, the glass with green tint on upper edge is shown as Porsche part number 928.541.011.07 for all years from 1977 thru 1995. So any 928 windshield should fit any year.

I also have the Sigla glass from Michelle, it has a sticker that says 'Made in Finland'. Maybe by someone Erkka knows!
