Glass from China is fine as long as you don't lick the windshield...

Or feed it to your dogs...all jokes aside, I am sure the Pilkington Glass for the 928 is going to be made in Europe. Just interesting to see the global consolidation of business.

Interesting comment on licking the glass...

Lead content in the glass is directly associated with the clarity of the glass itself. Just as old lead crystal items are cherished for their optical clarity, lead is also an important component n better windscreeens.

In my deep dark past, I spent some time doing antenna design stuff, specifically I was writing design software for stripline and slot antennas used on 'invisible' aircraft. As a spare time folly, I designed (and patented...) a through-the-glass antenna coupler to use on cars. You've undoubtedly seen derivative works on thousands of cars in the 1980's and 90's before the current crop of handheld phones became practical. Back to the issue-- Certain luxury cars, specifically Rolls and Bentley, and to a lesser extent M-B and Jaguar, had so much lead in the glass that the coupler was significantly detuned. We had to make specific couplers for those cars in consideration of the glass they came with. None of the US-supplied replacement glass for those cars came close to the lead content in the factory glass.

We can only hope now that there's a little bit of Barbie in every windshield.

Pilkington has plants all over the world. They do make a lot of claims of superiority of their glass making process involving tin float versus cheaper Chinese methods. I had a Pilkington windshield before and it was fine. The Chinese replacement has a noticeable wave in the visual field.

OK--

For those who loast track of this thread, it's time to move it to the top, and time to remind folks that TODAY is the drop-dead date for ordering glass for Sharktoberfest delivery. Michelle has been locating glass all over the country for folks who are coming to the event, and also for owners who want to take advantage of the group buy leverage but aren't bringing their cars to California. She mentioned that owners in Washington, New Jersey, and Mass have already arranged for local installation at her reduced prices.

So here's the deal--

If you want to take advantage of this offer, whether you plan to be at Sharktoberfest or not, plan to have it installed here or have it dropped to you or your local installer, you need to make arrangements with her before she goes home today. Her shipping logistics are based on more than single units, and they need to be in transit to make it in time for the event.

Bottom line-- Call her today!

I just bought one. Coming to the Pilkington warehouse 10 miles from my house in Minnesota. I'll arrange local installation.

I tried calling yesterday but wasn't able to get in touch with Michelle. Have I missed this boat?

Call her on Monday and ask. When I spoke with her Friday morning, she was pretty much cleaning out the Pilkington inventory in the western half of the country. Perhaps there's one close to you in inventory that won't need to be shipped. She has the warehouse inventory data and can tell you right away what's available and where it is.

Good luck!

When I bought my car in '02 there was a round crack about the size of a nickel on the pass. side, pretty much at eye level. I tried having a glass place fix it, but they couldn't; I even tried myself with one of the glass repair kits with no luck (but some nice little holes drilled in the outer glass layer for my trouble--- those things seem like they should work, but no dice....) Just a few weeks ago I got a much larger linear crack from a rock chip near the base that has already started enlarging and so now's the time. Of course, I need a new antenna (have been looking at shark-fin types) but the reception with the in-windshield one won't really be missed.

I suppose this is just a long winded way of saying I really hope to find a decent windshield on the east coast!

Soundin' like a broken record here. The names are changed to protect the innocent.

As the kids say, "woot". I got one, with an install date as soon as next week! Michelle could have not been more helpful and pleasant. Thanks to all who set this up.

Mark--

Glad it's working out!

For others who are still on the fence, make the call and git 'er done. Michelle is able to line up the glass with an installer local to you, all you need to do is call and set it up with her.

There are still about 5 uncommitted 5 windshields as of this morning that will be shipped here to the west coast for the Sharktoberfest event. If you will be at or near the area in the next couple weeks, this is a screaming deal. There may be a suprise on some of them too; won't know 'til the truck arrives though. Don't miss out!
