Ignition wires
While doing some other work on my shark, I noticed that the ignition wires are starting to show their age. The insulation is cracking and flaking in places. I had noticed an occasional rough running condition that I am wondering may be related to intermittant loss of spark in some wires.
So, I think to myself that I will just replace the wires.
Are you kidding me? $$$300 for ignition wires? Are they solid platinum? WOW.
So, I know that they will ultimately need to be replaced, but may need to wait until funds allow. Is there a cheaper alternative? Also, how do I go about trouble shooting the wires to make sure they are even a problem. Remember, the rough running is intermittant. I am planning on pulling the plugs to inspect them tonight to see about getting a little more info.
Thanks,
Steve

If you have have spotty rough running and bad wires, I would say new wires are the order of the day.
Magnecore makes a set, and you can find some in the ads in Excellence magazine.
I have had to replace the wires on every 928 I have owned. Nobody wants to pony up.
Nobody wants to be stuck in the rain on the side of the road either.
Go out and start your car in the dark. Look under the hood. Then rob the piggy bank.

I just ordered a set from Mark Robinson. $119.00 delivered with coil wires. One of my old coil wires was completely broken at the plug and has been arching for some time judging by the burnt distributor cap.
I sell sets of beru wires only - you reuse your own ends as long as they are good.
Available in Red, Blue and black for $99. Some of the earlier cars are more expensive as they come with the ends.

Steve, If you remember, I told you that you were going to have to do a top end refresh. I told you to budget $2K. I would be shocked after looking at that top end if you didn't have problems. Your intermittent problems could very well be vacuum related too, since it was obvious that no one has ever been in there. I know that you wanted to wait and make it a winter project but maybe now is the time? Sorry, I am not trying to be negative here, but you got a great deal on that car. The bad part.......lot's of people say " $300.00 for plug wires? Are they made of gold?" and they shortcut things or just ignore them. This is exactly the kind of thing that allows us " regular guys" to buy them. I don't know about everyone else, but if my 928 needs something, I get it and I don't shortcut. I don't want to be like the PO and do everything the cheapest way possible. Do I really need Y rated tires (186 MPH+) on my 928? Not really. I may see that on the dyno (175.21 on my last run) But on the street? Never. Do I want the peace of mind knowing they won't come apart no matter how fast I want to go? Absolutely!! I follow that philosophy with everything about the 928. Give it absolutely the best you can afford and it will never let you down. 928 ownership is a lot like marriage.....you have to work at it EVERY day....but if you do....it is returned and you are very happy. NOTE TO SELF.....Cut down on Captain Morgan.

Just so you know, I am taking your advise to heart and I am investing in the car bit by bit as I can afford. Since I bought the car in April I have over $500 in parts invested so far. Fuel lines and vac lines are my current project and are about half way done. I have also been spending a lot of quality time under, around and in the car getting to know it better. This winter I do plan on doing quite a bit more.
But, if there is an economical way that does not affect quality, I just call that being smart. No sense in throwing money away just because these cars are supposed to be expensive.
You are right Steve. Bitchin and moaning about it is absolutely your right, just like all the rest of us. Just felt like messing a little with ya. Glad you took that like the ball bustin it was. Good luck with her!
