I have a motor / trans from an automatic 89. The engine will be dropped into my 79 5-speed that will be will be using LH from an S4. So does that mean I'll need the auto timing ring I already have?

Bonus!

Stan,
Friend of mine is taking apart an 85 5-speed (I'm buying the transmission for my track car). That is the timing ring I was going to use, assuming it will work with the S4 LH system.

If I can confirm that timing ring will work, I will not need the S4 auto timing right on my new motor.

I guess Jim misunderstood what I was asking for a couple of weeks back. I am happy to pay $50. I will call you shortly.

Enzo, thanks anyways. I appreciate your effort here!

The 85 ring is 100-1. The S4 needs 60-1.

Cool, took care of a few issues in this thread

So Stan, keep me posted how the auto timing ring works with your setup.

Carl makes a light weight flywheel with no teeth at all, and you can make a timing ring with emachineshop.com and have it pressed on and studed so it stays on.

Because you will want to keep your dual disk clutch assembly I assume.

Yes I'm keeping the duel disc. I need to talk to Jim again, find out what he did since he's S4 is running a duel disc clutch. Few other people (like Mark A) are also running this setup.

I'm sure with Todd in my corner this won't be that big of a deal to figure out.

Carl's flywheel is a good option.

Carl's flywheel can be bought to include the correct timing ring. Since I already have a 86 flywheel, that is an expense I can save on.

I believe Mark A. has moved away from the setup you are referring to. John V. has been running it recently as well. Seems like the big hp track cars need a bit more than the dual disk at this point. I intend to follow Mark A's path on my race car clutch setup.

I remember Joe and Mark talking about the racing clutch in their cars. Not fun in the pits when trying to limp the car around.

Carl's flywheel looks like that will be the hot setup when I get that far with the car.
