OK an update on my Pilot Sport PS2's - just replaced:

225/45R17 (Stock Size) & 275/40R17 (larger)

I got 16K miles out of them - rears are done - fronts have a little tread but a new toe alignment problem has caused slight uneven wear so they are also toast.

16K was great for me - I don't recall easing up on it - so this is much better than my previous Bridgestone SO2's/SO3's - and quieter too. Grip was great on the SO2's & SO3's - equally good or slightly better on the PS2's (very close).

I could feel less front traction at the end (wear/alignment issue too) but the rears still seemed fine. All recent driving in dry summer conditions obviously helps...

I have refit PS2's but have now stepped the fronts up to 235/45/R17's.

The new set was a total of $1025 shipped from Tire Rack + $100 for installation & balancing from Wheel Specialists (my favored installer).

That change and a switch to bilsteins has made the car feel very different - just a few days in and still getting used to the new limits...

I had the same set up Alan; loved the PS2 tyres but 16k miles translates to ~25k km; mine were wore out well before that and I was always concerned about weather in spring and fall in this part of the world.

I've now fitted Michelin Pilot Sport A/S...............their highest perf. tyre that claims to be all season so no worries re. the weather and hopefully a little long wearing.

Front Michelin Pilot Sport, 225/40/18, Rear Michelin Pilot Sport, 285/30/18, I have put approximately 200 miles on these tires and LOVE them. The car may have something to do with my biased opinion.......... but they are great riding and handling tires (wet or dry) {{in my NOOB opinion}}.

Any new tires out there anyone's tried that they love or hate?

My PS2's have worn down to the chord on the rears (in the middle, too high pressure obviously, doh!) so I'm looking at replacements after about 10k miles. I guess that compares so-so with others for mileage on the rears. With the economy the way it is, $366 ea. (Tire Rack) for 265/30-19's PS2's is making me think twice. Fronts still have good tread on them.

I've been seeing some threads about Sumitomo HTR Z III's that seem positive and good pricing. Also interested in the BFG KDW 2's for both price and performance.

Rereading through this... great thread, don't let it die...

I've put the Sumitomo HTRZ-III's on the rear of my wife's car (SL-500). Seems solid, and they sure are cheaper than the michelins in the 285 and 295 sizes...

I'm still running Yokohama AD07's on the 928, which I love. When I fry the rears, if I have the money I may try the updated AD08's...

The bummer is the Yoko's are about the same price as the PS2's.....sometimes more!!!! Both are great tires too

Just put Kuhmo Ecsta XS's on my '92 GTS. They are 235 front and 275 rear and I LOVE THEM! Very smooth, very sticky, they ride better which makes me think they have a softer sidewall, but they seem to bite in corners very well too.

I like the tread pattern (though they have an outside and an inside so there is no switching sides of the car with these to get longer life and more even wear.) They were something like $130 for fronts and $175 for rears...

GUYS...I just looked at this and edited it...it is NOT the MX's that I like (those are on my '94 and they are so-so) it is the XS's that I LOVE! Sorry for any confusion that might have caused.

I just shod my ride with Nitto Invo's. These tires are very good when you get them up to temp. They are very predictable. I previously had Kumho Ecsta SPT's and while a very capable tire, they didn't talk to me. These Invo's really give me some great feedback as I push them telling me that they're going to break loose or that I can push them even harder. Oh, they cost me $800 fror all 4 - not bad IMHO.

We recently fitted Sumi HTR Z III's to the GT (225/45-17 front, 255/40 rear), good tires and can't beat the price. They are quiet on the highway, zero tramlining (proper alignment and a tight steering rack also helped a lot!!) and handle nicely in the twisties. They didn't like our surprise spring snowstorm, but we'll forgive them that.

Cheers, Jim

I have also just mounted the sumi HTR zIII (225/40-18 f,285/30-18 r) on both of my cars. I have only put a few hundred miles on one set, but about 3K on the other and they are very nice tires for the price. ($645.00 for four delivered from TireRack.com).

This spring I found some cup II wheels and mounted some Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 on them because they had 225 and 275 in stock.... So far I like them

Car is an 88 S4
Stock 16 in wheels
Came with Dunlop SP 5000's i.e. Les Schwab specials
About 4K miles ago
Have had the car for 200 miles or so. Don't do burnouts I almost need to replace the rear tires already.
They didn't look like they were holding up very well from their previous owner either
Recommendation: Stay far away from schwabbies they don't balance their wheels well or clean them before they mount weights.

Finally got the rear tires that my GT desparately needed (chord showing )

Due to the current economic times and no luck getting govt. bail out money for tires, I ended up replacing the Michelin PS2's that came on the 19" wheels when I got them with Kumho Ecsta SPT's. Pricing difference was over $200 PER TIRE from Tire Rack! Would have loved to stick with the PS2's, but just couldn't justifiy it for the price right now.

For 265/30-19's, the Michelin PS2's were $365 vs. $159 ea. for the Kumhos. Got the local Discount Tire store to match the out the door price (mounted, balanced, etc.).

Read several good Porsche specific (not necessarily 928) reviews for the Kumhos on Tire Rack's website, so we'll see how well they handle and wear.

Michelin Sport Rib
Front 225/40/18
Rear 295/30/18

Incredible grip and handling

Previously Front 235/45/17 Bridgestone SO-3's
Rear 255/40/17 Bridgestone SO-3's
Always thought these were the ultimate but Michelins are better IMHO
