yokohama ES100...road noise
I loved these tires when I got them. 10k later I hate them and want to replace them because the road noise is so bad. A loud humm constanting invading the cabin. They still have a lot of tread left on them so I will have to ride them out since I am not made of $$ but what a disappointment.

I never noticed road noise. Do you have an RMB? I used these tires for several years. Hard to beat the price. However, they are very compromised tires when pushed. For another $50 per you can get the BFG g-Force KDW-2 (aka KDW-NT), an outstanding tire that will way outwear the ES100 and drive circles around it. Also, I believe the tread pattern contributes to less tram-lining. Consider them when these get worn down.

I had a pair of yoko's and for the 1st half of it's treadlife they were pretty quiet, but then they began to sing. Very annoying. That was on my 82, then I sold it.
On my 91, I put a set of BFG G-force Sports, and loved them. Great price, great handeling, and very quiet. Others have had good experience with the Fuzion ZRi's by Firestone.

I had a set of Yoko AVS ES 100s on my '82, and do not recall excessive noise. I'm now running Bridgestone SO2s. Try the Yoko Advans, I've heard good feed back. Good luck

Perry -
I had the same experience with the yokes...and have posted on here about it several times.
Yep - they're great when new, but go downhill pretty quickly.
I have switched to the Fuzions and have been pretty pleased SO FAR! Not enough wear, yet, to know about noise.

Yea, I had read about the tire noise but thoguht for the price I could live with a little. I had no idea they would be this loud. It is really annoying and making my drive stressful.

I've got those on my 951 and find them to be EXCELLENT! SUPER performance in the wet, too! They're on 16" D90's, so I have had them on the shark before. I bought them when TireRack had a good sale on them about 6 or 8 months ago.

Now ya all tell me....sheesh!! :-) Add this stuff to the tire thread just started so we have a good consensus of tire info to draw from.

I have tried alot of tires in the past couple of years,
Falkens
FK451 - no grip until warmer than they should see on the street, not the best in the wet either, not great life
ZE502 - good tire all round
ZE512 - good grip wet and dry, practically no life though.
ZE912 - good grip wet and dry, haven't had them on the car long enough to tell about life
Fuzion ZR1s - good grip wet and dry and good life.
General Exclaims - great grip wet and dry, predictable when near the edge, life is better than some of the others. Make lots of noise when they are slipping, but until very hot dont leave any marks.
Toyo Proxies TS1 - garbage, avoid.
Nexen N3000 - great turn in responce and grip, havent driven them in the wet to see how they are in the wet yet.
Fulda Quantum Elite - good price ($110 cdn for 275/40ZR17), grip in the dry appears to be pretty good even though I havent worn off the coating though. Havent driven them in the rain yet so I cannot comment on that.
I know I am probably forgetting one or two here. But this will do for now.
Now I cannot comment on road noise on any of these because you just dont have the same issues with road noise up here in BC as you do on some of the roads in the US.
Also with regards to tire life, I have about .7 deg of camber in the front, so the insides wear alittle quicker than the outsides with all the highway driving. The rears are right at spec and wear perfectly all the way across. Now taking that into account if I see 5000km on a set of tires before I am at the wear bars I will be happy.
I work out in the field and only drive the cars for pleasure and when I drive them I drive them fairly hard and really give them a work out. The rears always tend to make abit of noise when I leave the line in the 81. When I get a new set of tires I do put them to a few tests as I like to know just how much grip they have and how they react as they let go.

Had two sets. Neither lasted more than 3000 miles. Noisy as hell. Never go back.
I, too, thought I could live with it for the price. Nope! GRip gets really greasy too, if you push them hard. They'd tail off after only 3 or 4 auto-x runs to the point it became a drifting contest.

I'm struggling with this decision now....unfortunately. I need some new rears - 245/45-16.
I've had the Bridgestone S03's, but just about EVERYTHING is now discontinued! It's crazy! No more Michelin Pilots, no more S02/S03, no RE01,
they've ALL been discontinued...
Except:
Yokohama AVS-ES100
Cont. Sport Contact
Fuzion ZRi (?)
So, my search continues... I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I don't want wabble-rubber either...

Not much available in the 16" range. I'll probably go with the Fuzions if I keep my stock wheels. I've had a set of Pirelli P7000 (I think) on there for 6 years and there's still some tread left but about time to let them go. 6 years and 25,000 + miles on the Pirellis - can't ask for much more.
