Post Project almost finished

Soon my two plus year project will be complete. I just need to start the programming of my new engine management system and get her on the road. Here is a brief list of modifications:

88 S4 block
104 mm J&E pistons(5.4L 10.4:1)
944 heads
Devek 2-valve race cams
Drilled crank to fix high speed oiling
Euro S extrued honed intake
Devek radiator
S4 cooling fans
JetHot coated headers
Custom free flow exhaust
Electromotive engine management
S4 brakes
Forgeline rims
ETC, ETC,.......

Question.

Why would you not have gone with a diffrent intake?

It's my understanding that the standard spider, while cool looking, is very restrictice.

Why not try maybe the later GTS intake, I though you could switch them out, with a bit of work. It seems like the later intake would be les restrictive than the spider.

Thanks

WOW JIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're really pushing the envelope there. Hope she lays down some great HP. Please keep the board/list informed on how the remainder goes.

So with new pisons, crank, etc, you obviously did a full engine rebuild. So is that a stroker crank? Or not? It seems like if you are doing all this engine work, you would want to do a stroker at the same time...

And what is the deal with the ignition system? In that picture, it looks like you have 4 distributors or something...

Looks like a cool project, regardless...

Vibrus,

I suppose anything can be done with enough time and money..... I don't know of anyone who has used a 4-valve intact tract on a 2-valve head though. I have seen the S4 intact transplanted to an early 4-valve head. The Euro intake is much larger than the US intake and was rated with more horsepower than the US car at the same time; in fact, the Euro's were rated at 70 more horsepower in 1980 than their equivalent US car and 22 more horsepower in the 1986 928 using 2-valve heads vs the US 4-valve heads.

Bcdavis,

There are four separate spark distributors on the engine management system.

I didn't do a stroker kit because I didn't want to spend anymore money. I can get much more horsepower with a supercharger from a square motor than you can get from a sroker kit. I plan on boosting this motor to around 5 to 8 psi and with the current engine management system and engine modifications it shouldn't be very difficult to get this car to 600 or 700 hp.

Jim-

VERY interesting to say the least. Since you opted for the 944 heads, what cam profiles are you using? Are they based on the 944 profile, the Euro 928 profile, or ???

Let us know on how the engine tuning goes - and about how long it take to get the optimum performance from it. I, for one, would be very interested.

Hey Jim, nice work. The one item I want to change on my s4 is the rear axle ratio. I figure if I can raise it to a 3.55 or so the character of the car would be completely different and sooo much faster around town. Any ideas?

Definitely a story for the 928 magazine.

Or, if they don't want it, maybe this would make Excellence magazine write something about 928s. Not that I would hold my breath...

Greggg-

928 International has a GTS with a custom rear axle ratio (exact number escapes me - but I seem to recall 3.07:1).

Speaking with Jim, he indicates that the unit was fabricated for the PO by a 3rd party for ~$3500.

Not sure what kind of performance (acceleration) the higher gearing provides - but I'm sure a call monday could get more info.

Thanks Jay, good idea but the $ is too high for me. I guess its not as easy as taking the car to the ring and pinion shop, throw $400-500 at em and its done...

Jay,

This might be a project I would be interested in completing next winter. Please check on the info for me.

Thanks,

Jim,

Most excellent! I'd like to see what the output would be on that thing with some manifold pressure. I'd bet 600 Hp is easily doable with about 8 psig or so. But don't tell Carlos that.

I debated using a stand alone engine management system, but the cost is sky high and then I have to progam it. So for now, I live with the piggy back microfueler Callaway installed, at least it has some adjustability.

Jim, please tell us about that funky coil set up.

What is it, Who makes it and what kind of gains are expected. Any more pictures?.

Thank You

Thanks.

For some reason I was under the mistaken impression that the US and Euro 4.7l engines used the same intake. (opps.) If I was the German designer, I would have used the same. Only one set of castings, only one set of everything. Then when it came to the US motor, only change what I was forced to.

I was also under the mistaken impression that the intake replacement from early to later was pretty much a drop in. Don't ask me why. I don't know.

As you can see, from what I thought, it made alought of sence. Opps.

I'll try to avoid doing that in the future.
