Default HELP!!! Alarm on!????

I have a 928S (86.5) and apparently it has an alarm. When I go to unlock the car, the alarm goes off. Obviously the car won't start. What do I do???

Hugs,

Scott

Are you using the long key? Have you tried to lock/unlock from both doors? How about opening the hatch? Check to see if there are any blown fuses (you never know). I know you can disable the alarm by jumping the relay connector but I don't remember the pin numbers... try searching "disabling alarm" or factory alarm. I believe the alarm relay is under the center console.

Yes, I am using the alarm key.

Ok, here's the full truth. I live in NYC, keep the car in California (San Luis Obispo) as a second car (I do business out in CA.) My friend is keeping the car at his house and driving it for me twice a week to keep the car (and its rubber components) moist and happy.

He goes to the car and unlocks it to start it up. It starts beeping like crazy (he calls me as it is beeping) and of course the car won't start because the security alarm is doing its job.

I tell him to go to the back hatch and unlock it with the key. He does. Then he shuts the hatch. Unlocks the door, it doesn't beep, and the car starts fine.

So in any case I am reporting this all in the third person. I guess I'd better get this checked out before I take someone out on a date with it...

Thanks for your replies Paul and perrys4. Rennlist was a BIG factor in my purchase of the 928. That, and the fact that I have lusted after it for... 22 years!

Sounds like you need to replace or clean the contacts on the microswitches in the door locks.

Sounds like what happened to me on my '86. The wire to the drivers door was disconnected so unlocking that door did little for resetting the alarm. By unlocking the hatch I was able to reset the alarm, like you had your caretaker do. My passenger side is still connected as well, it was just the drivers door lock that wasn't connected to the alarm circuit anymore, but as soon as I opened the door the alarm went off!

I had a sort of similar experience with my '89 S4. I had locked the car via the hatch not realizing that the driver's door was still open. The alarm went off right away! Startled the hell outta me!

Lesson learned and it's never happened again.

Since your alarm reset itself after your friend unlocked the door, and then it started up fine afterwards, I wouldn't rush off to the mechanic just yet. Keep a eye, I mean ear, open and make sure the doors and hatch are fully closed before locking her up.

Hope the rest of your weekend is quiet!

Jeff--

Are you saying that if the hatch wasn't completely closed (which it very well may not have been), then unlocking the car would have sounded the alarm?

Scott,

That wasn't what happened me, in my case I was locking the hatch with a door still open.

But is it possible that your friend (without realizing it) was actually locking the car rather than unlocking it? If perhaps the door wasn't locked to start with and then the key was turned (locking it instead) with the hatch not shut, the alarm would sound.

I'm not sure how familiar your friend is with your 928, but I know it took me a little while with mine to get used to turning the key in the correct direction to lock and unlock because on my previous car it was the exact opposite!

Hi Scott:

I had a similar problem with my '85 and got tired of dealing with it so I bypassed the damn thing. I've had my radio stolen twice and the frigging alarm didn't go off either time or if it did, it didn't stop the thief. The damn thing doesn't seem to bother anyone but me, so I turned it off.

The following thread will show you how. It's really quite simple, just jumper pins 1 and 4 and it's off forever.

Let me know if you need any help.
