Default Dark tail lights - how??

I saw a post earlier today, which I can't find now, that had a grey or gray ;-) early model with dark taillights - every elegant looking. I was wondering who has it and what they did to get that effect.

I'll even settle for a jog of my memory as to where it was posted...

Never mind... I found it.

Thanks
Rod

It has been done with window tinting film (great finish, but has a tendency to come lose on the edges), and with Testors window tinting spray paint from the hobby shop.

I've used the former for my tail lights, and the latter for my side markers. The tail lights will eventually get a different treatment: The amber section will be sprayed with a thin layer of Candy Apple Red, and then Window Tinting Paint. This should eliminate all amber...

That's a track-prepped car, with black inserts where the tail-lamps used to be.

A cheap way us poor 944 folk use is with transparent model car spray... At least it makes our taillights look less like volvo lights.

There are a ton of body shops that do it nowadays.
They mix black and clearcoat, and do several coats, then one final coat of clear.

Here is one place:

I had mine done in a smoke color professionally by a shop tat does them - then I went on a Porsche Run and everyone following me said they could not see my brake lights that well- so I paid again for used tail lights to replace them! My advice - don't do it!

hello Rod,

I just picked up a black 82 with painted lights. You can hardly see the lights (signals, brakes, reverse). What ever you do, I suggest using a temporary method to see if you like the results.

I'm experimenting on my S4 with a temporary film that I purchased at a local auto shop. This is the "clinging" film that's used for windows...not the tint.

Good luck...

Regards,
Roger
