Greg:

Nice photo.

Is that a 355mm rotor ? Given the hat, it sure looks like it !

think Mark Anderson runs F50 brakes on his race car....

What about keeping the GTS calipers...changing pads & getting a two piece "hat" design rotor......I heard that the F50 and GTS brakes use the same brake pads.....so the swept area should be the same...just with a larger rotor to aid cooling?
That is not correct, they use totally different pads, the swept area is smaller on the F50 discs but it has greater leverage and the Pagid RS4-4 pads I run are the same pads used by Porsche in motorsport events. Funnily enough when I typed RS4 I got RS$ which is the case with these pads, they are great even on the street, I have not noise issues on the street, they are quiter than the old Textars that came with the GTS calipers.

The only diff between the calipers is the piston sizes.

The F50 stuff is lighter by about 2 pounds per side if my memory serves me correctly.

That rotor is 14" or 355 mm.

Friend has looked into this a little. He is currently working on geting 996 GT2 monoblocks into GT spindle. Not easy but doable with enough . He has also looked into using Cayenne disks as they are $100 per pair in German eBay. Work in progress.

I would only do this with going to the newest Monblocs. Very light, as mentioned, and the time spent fitting is a one time deal. Much bigger rotors (and much more $$ unless the cayenne thing works)

Okay....I guess what I tried to remember (always a challenge) is that the swept area on the F50's is less....that must be it....I talked to a racing brake guy about which pads to use on stock brakes 928's....he went on and on about how the "upgrade" to the F50 14" brake is not worth it, compared to Big reds with a floating hat rotor design...he thought the performance gained is so small its not worth the $$$....he liked the brembo racing 8 piston 15" brakes....but those are big $$$ over $4k I think?

Let me know if you want to sell your GTS front brakes-rotors-dust shield!

Brian:

Don't assume that the F50 caliper requires a 14" rotor. I will be running the F50 caliper on a 332mm rotor, just slightly larger than stock GTS. I wanted the F50 caliper / pad to match the 993RS rears.... all fun stuff.

Once I have the stock GTS pieces off my car, I'll decide what to do. Eventhough my car is stock and seemingly VERY original, with 68K miles, I doubt it will ever command enough value to hold onto the stock bits. The big decision will come once my 6.1 liter motor is in the car, what to do with the stock GTS engine. That decision should be surrounded with LOTS of fun !!!

My experience is different. When I went from an F40 caliper with a 13"rotor to an F50 with a 14" rotor it was a huge difference. I had to completely remove the rear bias regulator to make them work harder. The F40 and F50 are basically the same caliper it's just that the F50 is deisgned for a 14" rotor. The pad they use is basically an S4 pad infact I have modified some old S4 pads to use them.

Since I have Mark's old F40/13" setup, I will chime in here and say that the 13" combo overpowers a 265 tire pretty easily, and definitely needs a bias valve change to work. They are much easier to modulate than the stock brakes, and the pedal never gets mushy on the track. Once you grow accustomed to not STOMPING on the pedal, they are a pleasure to use and work very well.
I have 17" HRE wheels, and I believe I could get 350mm rotors inside them, if the caliper is cut to fit that diameter rotor.
On a car with street tires, I'm not sure you would notice a big difference going from 13" to 14". With Mark's 315 size race tires, different story!

So you had a slightly bigger than GTS front brake "before" you stepped up to the 14" F50 brakes...... The F50 brakes do seem very popular right now...a local shop has them on a mustang and corvette..... I guess everyone can't be wrong??

I do wonder what the 15" Brembo 6-8 piston racing brakes would be like? Of course they better be the best...since they cost $10K+

380mm Cayenne front rotor fits directly into S4 etc hub according to friends trial fitment. They are probably cheapest really large rotors available. If fitting 996 GT2 brakes were easy...
