Praise for the 928 in Winding Road
Not sure if any of you read the online rag "winding road". David E. Davis (whom I'm not actually a huge fan of) is an Editor there, and in his most recent column, he has this to say:
"The Audi R8 is the coolest car to come along since the Porsche 928."
That's the opening line.

"Cynics and died-in-the-wool 911 and 356 fanatics tend to write the 928 off as a cross between a 924 and a Corvette. They're wrong. If you approach this car with an open mind, open the door, sit down, fire it up and drive it away, it will quite simply blow your mind. To get out of whatever you were driving and take the 928 for a spin is as liberating as your first ride on a motorcycle, your first kiss from a girl who knew how. You may frighten yourself, in a burst of unbridled enthusiasm, but the 928 won't. It's a rolling womb of whispering, humming, tactile assurances that everything on this particular road on this particular day is going to be all right. Dreamlike, you fly down the road like a bat out of hell with nothing more than the blurring of the trees and the moan of the engine to call your attention to the speedometer. This is grand touring, folks, and whatever it costs, it's worth It." - David E. Davis, Jr. April 1978

Jim,
I was liking that quote until i saw when it was published. 1978, damn, remember the 928 was light years ahead of anything else at the time. I would love to hear what some of the auto writers would have to say if they drove a supercharged GT or GTS that was well sorted back to back with something more current. I would love to know how the contemporary 928, (a supercharged or stroked, and fully leather lined S4-GT-GTS, with new suspension bits and 18" or larger wheels) would fair against some of the newer cars to the market. Preferably by a younger writer that has no previous time in a 928. Would love to get that perspective.

Yes, David E. Davis has always been a big fan of the 928.
I was a longtime subscriber to Car & Driver, and he was the editor (?) there for quite some time. That quote from 1978 was probably from C & D.
I haven't been able to find the quote, but sometime in the latter 80's I remember him commenting in his column that the 928 would be his vehicle of choice if he ever had to drive cross country. Reasons cited: Fast, luxurious, and nothing said "move over" more than a 928 in one's rearview mirror.

I have a 2003 Dodge Hemi Pickup, crew cab. From the factory it had 345 HP. With the Hyper-Tech it's about 375 HP and 410ft pds torque. And it cost me $32,000 But, if I'm going for a 900 mile drive, I'll take the 928, no question about it. And the really funny part is that when I get to my destination, I won't want to get out of it. Do 900 mile in the $32,000 pickup and I can't get out fast enough.....usually running for the nearest bar.

Not really, most of the guys own/drive older models. Remember they get to drive new press cars all the time that are delivered, picked up and maintained by someone else. They are enthusiasts and buy what they like. Editor had a nice 356, art director had/has a nice 80 something 911, writer has a really early 911, ect. There are some eclectis tastes at the mag from Morgans to Bugeye Sprites.

Having owned an '80 928 and a 993 at the same time I can tell you there was no question the 928 was the choice for commuting. It was by far the more comfortable ride. I knew if I got in the twisties it could handle the business end of things just as well as lumbering along the highway. Not as well as a much lighter and more powerful 993 but pretty damn impressively (despite only having 240bhp and a 3spd auto tranny). I'd have kept both cars but the 928 was getting very expensive to maintain and the 993 wasn't cheap with all its mods. Although I know lots of newer cars have better power to weight or gearing for going 0-60 than the 928 (and my 993 for that matter) the slogan still holds true today no matter what the application: "Porsche, there is no substitute" The 928 is a very special car and I'm sure one day I'll have the means to have a GT to fill in the gap between my 993 and SUV. Anyway, just thought I'd drop by for a visit to my more (ahem) distinguished brethren

Thanks, for stopping-by, 2ndof2! That's interesting input. Hope that some day you find your perfect 928 GT. Just keep in mind they are not getting any younger (both age and mileage wise)...

I love when people make blind statements.
Jim...Crazy as it is, that statement still holds true today!

Keith: Relax! He compared HIS 928 with HIS 993 - not the 928 in general with 993s in general.
