One Sat. night about 3 weeks ago, coming home from out of town, the wife, I & our 17 yr old daughter were in the wife's '91 S4. We were on the last few miles of interstate before our exit. I was in the far left of three lanes cruising at about 75 mph. That section of interstate is very long & straight(Florida, go figure). I was tired after a long day & a few hours of night time interstate driving.

I noticed in my rear view mirror, way, way back in my lane, a car closing on me very fast, so I eased over into the middle lane. I commented that there was a guy coming up that was "flyin!" I almost forgot about him until a few minutes later. I happen to notice a car in my peripheral vision to the left that had just gone past me a bit over my speed, that was now slowing back down.

Well, I stayed at my speed on cruise control & he then started to go a few car lengths ahead as though he was done looking at me. I could then see the rear of the car & that it was a GTO. I know they are suped up & all but geeze those things are plain & other than the yellow color it was ugly! He then slowed back down again to be even with me for half mile or so, obviously hoping to entice me to play. I had a car in front of me in my lane, so I couldn't "play" even if I wanted to.

As we neared the exit before ours, the cars in the far right lane all took the exit, leaving that lane pretty much empty. That's usually a good place to have a free shot in the far right lane as the interstate has an overpass over the exit. I hit the gas as I changed into the right lane after the exit. My daughter was watching him & said he punched it too when I did. I was thinking this guy would blow my doors off, but no go, he did not catch me, though he was obviously trying. I was probably 4-5 car lengths ahead of him for another mile & I hit 1XX before slowing back down.

When I slowed back down & he stayed right next to me then. I never got to look over cause our exit was coming up, but my daughter said, "Hey dad, that guy has his passenger window down & just gave you a thumbs up!" I did roll down my window & wave just as I took the off ramp. I figured maybe I just caught him in a lull or sleeping when I nailed it. Even though I got the jump on him & held the distance, I wasnt pulling away too much that I could tell when I let off the gas & we seemed to stay that 4+ car length distance apart. I thought for sure he'd leave me in his dust even if I did get the jump on him. I even said that before I nailed it. I told the wife & daughter, watch how fast this guy's car is when I punch it. I told them afterwards that surely from red light to red light I wouldn't of had a prayer!

But that was a nice suprise either way.... and I KNOW the shark looks a million times better than his Pontiac.

Not all new GTO's were created equal until 05 they were 350 HP 5.7 liters the later is 400 HP 6 liter but at 3,700 LBS it is a porker.

GTO might have had http://ststurbo.com/gto_6_0l_dyno One of the most popular kits they sell.

Doubtful it was a stock 6.0 if he pulled away that hard.

C6 6sp is same hp in a MUCH better pkg. 80-120 roll spanked SATA, especially the 6sp vs auto and unfortunate 2-3 shift point start speed. Nevertheless, he lurched ahead and clearly walked away, but didn't "pull hard" by any means.

If it seemed like you were in 4th and he was just gone, it was modded...and likely why he sports the vanity plate. Still a fast car off the showroom though -don't see how anyone would consider it a looker.

Good story...even on the slower side.

I drove an automatic 2006 GTO (6.0L LS2 400hp) a while back......the car sucks....doesn't really ride or handle well...squeeks and rattles bad....build quality just sucks.... The motor is very nice.....lots of torque everywhere....smooth powerband with no real flat spots.... It did feel much stronger in the Vette...with its 500lbs less weight than the GTO.... I think stock GTO's run mid 13's 1/4 mile....so its not that much faster than a strong stock S4....especially at higher speeds....that GTO had to be modified...which is really easy to do with a LS2

Brian... I am so very close to having my GT in fighting shape. Wish I could have been there. It would have been fun!

WOW, my PO lives!! Long time no see. You better be at Frenzy this year. We need to do a photo reunion.

+1

They are not that fast but I have seen some with simple mods claim close to 500 RWHP. Sounds like this thing was worked.

HAHA, yeah I live. Have been through a lot in the last year on a personal level. Still have 1 issue left to sort out on my 87. Ever since I have the catless x-pipe put on I get this strange whine or high pitched vibration noise only once the car warms up. It stops when you hit the gas, but comes back once your foot is off the gas. It started the same night I had the x-pipe and GT resonators put on so I am guessing it's in there somewhere. It's really annoying so I have put maybe 200 miles on the car this year. I just need to get it in and get it looked at incase it;s something else.

How's the 88 doing? Not too sure about those wheels ( just kidding you ).

Yup . I pulled up to one at the top of an overpass. We were side by side thru the turns that feed on to the frontage road. When we hit the straight I droped a couple gears and nailed it. We went at it for about a quarter mile or so. He never caught up but I wasnt leaving him either. I would say our cars are about even with a GTO.

big heavy car with less than ideal weight distribution and what is assumed to be a GM suspension commensurate with the price point.

i.e., it can't be good

The GTO probably had new technology versus the "older" technology of the 928 being discussed here. How many years did it take for someone with a GTO to be able to dust a928 on an open section of road? And, no matter how much hp, it's still a GTO, while you still have the Porscle...
