I have searched the forum but no luck so please help. My 83's steering wheel has approximately 1/4" amount of play vertically and horizontally. The steering itself still feels good. The arrow points to where the pivot originates. The problem started yesterday.
I may not post much but I do enjoy reading yours. Thank you. Dane

Dane--
There's a bearing there that's a known failure point. It's a little work to change it but not real tough. keeping track of all the pieces is the challenge. Take a look at any of the tips pages for some guidance.

Dane,
I had a similar problem with my 82. I was just about to bearing, which is supposed to be a problem. I pulled the pad off of the steering wheel to discover it was just a loose nut. I agree that it is probably the bearing, but you may check to make sure the nut is tight before you buy it. Takes all of about 30 seconds.

Bob,
Thank you for the reply. I just read that the trick to removing the wheel pad is to pull really hard. I'm on my way out now to give it a go. I, hopefully, will have the same diagnosis you did!

Careful pulling the pad off - yes, it does take a sharp pull; however, pull too far when it releases and the horn wire may depart with it. Also, there are 4 springs that clip over plastic retainers that hold the pad on - a straight pull will avert breakage of these tabs.

Thank you for the tip, Garth. I was able to remove the pad and you are absolutely correct about the horn wire! I didn't damage the wire but I can now see how it could be if the pad was pulled too hard.
I found that, thankfully, the nut was loose. So, that makes a total of TWO loose nuts behind the wheel. I know I can tighten one but the other is beyond help....

Hi Dane,
I hope tightening the big nut solves your problem. If not, you will still need to replace the upper steering wheel bearing. Not too bad of a job and about $30 part.

I, too, hope the tightening does the trick. If not, I am glad you added the tip because I know I'd be asking what to do next. Thanks very much.
Macreel,
Thank you for the heads up as I needed to know this as well. I read the nut was 27mm but nothing beyond that.
Thanks again for all the help!! d

I am not sure of what he means by keep track of all the parts.. You pull the wheel off, so you have a wheel, washer, spring lock washer and nut, I forget if you have to losen the pod and remove the switch stalk... but it is really not that hard. If i recall their is a "C" clip also... You will need a helper to help you put the "C" clip back on. I know when you go to put it all back together it doesnt look right. But a spring pulls the shaft into the tube when you remove the "C" clip... kind of like a ball point pen. You need to have someone pull the shaft out so you can put the "C" clip back on.. I used vice grips to grab the nut and pull. Be carefull the VG do not pull off and smack you in the face

By George, I think I found it. Heres a direct link:

Although, who is in this quote "Dave Roberts?"

Dave Roberts sent me a bearing overnight so I could drive the car at the weekend, small cost ~$16 so it is cheap, however the replacement is a little involved if not overly difficult.
