Robert,

couldn`t find any information which seal kit you used.
I recently re-sealed my steering rack using the kit from rennbay (BTW: thanks again to Schocki and Ingo) and it seems to work out fine. After app. 100 miles I did not find any leaks.

Jon,
Nice pics. Could you email me the PDF of the ZF rack? Also, how did you replace the nylon washers and the orings under them? I've rebuilt a couple of racks and never replaced them because I couldn't figure out how to get the old nylon rings off.
Thanks

That is a RHD rack , ex UK car & owner.

Jon , maybe edit your first post to say RHD pics so as not to confuse LHD re-builders !

That Rack seal kit is WAY more complete than what we get here, with the curved shaft alignment piece, as well as some other pieces, like the plastic shaft alignment piece that goes inside the metal bushing.

That is NOT what we have available to use here.

From memory the kit came from ZF in the UK.

If the seal kits available in the US - about $75US ? don't contain the shaft alignment sleeve and the curved pressure pad it may be worthwhile me going back to the supplier I was talking to here in OZ and checking if they are in the kits they could supply - cost would be similar.

Yes, it would be very worthwhile. I gave up, and bought a rebuilt for my 78, however, after the second useless transtec rebuild kit.

Jon,

Interesting to hear ZF sells re-sealing kits in the UK. Here in Germany they don`t (using a ridiculous excuse: steering rack is a safey part. With this explanation brake pads should not be available on the market either, but they are).
This is why we used the kit from rennbay, also referring to their tutorial on their website).
Again, re-seal procedure took us about 4 hours and the result is great.

Robert

I don't know exactly where the kit I had came from - I got it from Adrian Clarke (AdrianSE here I think)
My godfathers company was for a while the ZF agent in the UK and I could have got kits from him but wether they were available retail to just anybody I don't know. I am investigating a possible lead here in OZ

Great topic and flicks.
Brendan, (et all),
Out of curiosity... did you rebuild a 78' rack
PN 928-347-010-22 with rack ends: Left 26mm, Right 25mm. Length 795mm
Or a transition rack:
PN 928-347-010-22 with rack ends: Left 26mm, Right 23mm. Length 795mm
Or the 'NEW' rack:
PN 928-347-010-22 with rack ends: Left 23mm, Right 23mm. Length 810mm
All of these racks were interchangeable (alledgedly) up to the 88 MY.And I'm also curious if they were interchangeable with the GT's and GTS's. Anyone Know?
Other than the rack end differences, over all length change from the early/transition racks which also had a different stop and still had a spacer compared to the NEW racks were there any major differences?

You can interchange however you must have the corresponding steering stops.
Although a rebuilder or remanufacturer may not wish to accept a different core.

Awesome post, I once rebuilt a 44 steering wheel rack and swore I would never do it again and looking at your pics, I now know why. Hats off to anyone that undertakes this.
