DriveTrain Vibration
Now that it is all back together and the disturbing rattle I had is gone, I now have a teeth shuttering vibration that starts at 1k and maxes out at 3k rpm. The vibration is the same in neutral or any gear.
My TT was replaced 2.5 years ago by the PO.
Could it be the mounts?
Could it be installed wrong?
Could the "new" part be faulty?
Any suggestions would be highly apreciated.
cheers,
Sab. <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />
Sorry that I have no direct experience with that problem. I have heard of others like Bernie and Brad having minor whine or vibration at a similar rpm range. Hope you work it out. Did you replace toque converter (tc) bearings? Were torque tube (tt) bearings seated properly? They can shift.
I probably replaced too many tc seals when I did the tt and tc job. See the list below. What tc seals did you replace?
A/T Main Pump Gasket, $6, 126.271.128.0
A/T Main Pump Sealing Inner (2), $7, 126.272..095.0
A/T Main Pump Seal Outer, $9, 010.997.474.7
A/T Main Pump Sealing Inner Large, $4, 016.997.144.8

What is the proper procedure for seating TT bearings. I spun the tt when it was all apart and it felt smooth as silk.
I found something on Pelican Parts regarding a "Converter Drive Flange", where they say: "This flexible rubber disc often wears when the car ages, resulting in significant vibration in the drivetrain. In most cases, vibration problems found on the older automatic transmission cars can be solved with the replacement of this disc."
What is that all about? I wasn't aware of any rubber disks in there???

Sab.

Thanks for reminding me of the wisdom of doing those seals. Maybe I do have some good common sense. The reason I was curious about a lesser level of service is that replacing all of those seals involves a special tool and additional hours of expensive mechanics time. My poor scrupulous mechanic quoted me a fixed price for the job. I do not know how many mechanics will know about the special tool or bother to pull the transmission pump to replace all those seals.
Hi Sab,
Still curious about which seals you had replaced

I though I had two seals replaced on the tc, but I did not really discuss it with my mechanic. He showed me a small (I guess shaft seal) and a rather large gaskit type seal.
I just went by and we looked at it on the lift. Placing a jack under the tranny and taking some weight off almost completely eliminates the vibration. So I guess I will replace my tranny mounts next.

Sab.
