'88 S4 in SF Bay Area...what's wrong with this car?
On S.F. Craigslist for months now....
It's one of the cheapest S4's I've ever run across and looks at least decent in the poor-quality pix.
I check the VIN on Autocheck and last reported mileage was 81K in Nov/Dec 2004, so it probably doesn't have super high mileage.
But there it sits. I'm sure some sharp-eyed RL'ers must have noticed this car? Has anyone visited it? Does anyone know what's wrong with it?

There's a link in the CL ad to a website with a couple more pix.
(No afflilation, not really any interest in purchasing the car, but curious.)

I see some stuff missing:
rear spoiler
front spoiler
psgr side headlamp washer
hood badge
driving lights
plastic caps on US front bumpers
seat release *****
climate control ****?
drivers window control loose
Kinda looks like it got repainted but they didn't keep all the parts.

Inside, this does not look like an '88.
Those seats have 944 style switches. (or did sports have those only?) The speaker grills look like they are out of something from the late '70's.
I do like the steering wheel.
As mentioned above, it looks damn rough, almost 1/2 in to a restoration with crappy or missing parts.

I think this is a better deal though: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/372696-guards-red-1990-s4-for-sale.html

been listed for a while. Seems like a potentially good car, but zero history.
talked with the guy ~3mos ago when listed for $5899, but he said it was a typo and should be $9899. He said it was an '88 GT even though the initial listing stated '85 S (as well as the window sticker of '85). He didn't know any maintenance history, but said it ran fine and everything should work fine...offered if it didn't they could probably fix it before selling it. He said it was all original even though pictures show it's not. He said it was in perfect condition, even though it's missing some small interior/exterior pieces.
As seen, the price has continually dropped, there are fewer pictures, but the info seems correct now. IF AC works, CarFax confirms mileage and all electrical is functioning, figure $7k plus ~$2k for TB/WP etc (again assuming nothing major, else PPI) and it seems like a keeper w/only 86k on the clock. Gotta like the naked tail though.

Definitely looks like a project car. Even if the mileage is correct, based on the missing items obvious in the pics, I would expect to do a lot of work getting that car in shape. Definite TB/WP/fluids job + probably everything else you might expect to fix or replace like CV joints, A/C, etc. I bet its disappointing once you get a good look at it. There are few "deals" when it comes to low priced 928s. Pay me now or pay me later. Besides, if it was worth buying, I'm sure Dan Brindle would have bought it by now. Its not far from his house.
