I don't know... probably the same reason that I would pay $59 for a tool that I might only use once when I can make the acrylic one for nearly nothing.

I just like to discuss and consider the alternatives to the things we take for granted, and am continuously amazed that I receive so much flack for it. Being the owner of an *out-of-production* car requires a degree of resourcefulness that increases over time!

I've made one of the Acrylic Tension Tools and will be using it when I put everything back together (OK that's a fib - actually I asked my dad to make one for me). Luckily a friend has offered to lend me the excellent value Kempf tool anyway so I can check how well the homemade tool works.

Anyone else tried it?

If I use it 6 times at $10 a shot the price sounds a lot better.

I did see a T Belt job on the net and they were using a fishing scale to turn a 6 in. 3/8 drive handle into a torque whench. While I have the scale out I'll run a few numbers on the belt itself.

Yeah dude. You go ahead and make sure you use that fishing scale to tension the longest rubber auto belt that existed. You go right ahead.

Jesus. This is funny.

The other tool i s 500 freaking dollars!

We love you Jay.

There is only one acceptable gauge; buy it, use it often, lend it to others; but don't jack with the number one cause of expensive repair to our engines. It takes only an hour to check tension; after the first time it takes less. Do it right, take no chances.

Think it's already pretty clear that Jay Kempf tool is the one to get. Just one more vote on it's favor.

Just recently friend tried Kempf and factory tools side by side on his S4. He hadn't ever done tensioning on 928 before and commented that Kempf was much easier to get constant results. Factory tool reading varied few tenths both during calibration and actual measuring. Maybe more practise is needed but why bother when one can get ten Kempf's for one factory. I only wish Jay would do one for 944 and 968. Now that would sell by the thousands.

I use a combination of hand tightness and the virtual tensioner tone method. But now that I have an interference engine... I'm thinking...

No! I have used mine about every six months when I inspect the belt. Cheap insurance policy.
Thanks Jay.
