Ahh, I've always referred to those as half shafts.

Yeah, and I don't see the bolts falling out of the half shafts either. Not to be rude, but has he looked at a TT under a 928?

As far as the problem, I once stripped the spline gear on the rear of my TT and initially got a shrieking noise and then it acted like it was in neutral no matter what I did. It was in my 80 Euro S 5 speed, but I would suspect you might be able to have the same problem with your auto. Unfortunately, as you probably know, removing the TT is not a trivial task.

Ed

you can rule out the half shafts/drive shafts and CV joints without lifting - just crawl underneath the rear and vigourously shake the shafts themselves - if they're solid and don't move they're OK, Twist them and there should be no or just a tiny bit of rotational play between the shafts and the outside of CV joints at each end of the shaft.

Bolts coming out of half shaft cvs is not at all rare from my reading of the web, especially after work being done on them (not true this time though). Test them as Jon says above, will only take a minute, and a bit of grovelling.

Wish I could help...my total empathy on this. I recently paid $90.00 for a local yokel shop to get my 86.5 up, add A/T fluid, look in the usual suspect places for leaks and follow my directions throughout. Glad to be leaving this M.O. behind. Ordering Porkens liftbars today. Shop tools are almost up to necessary levels now. The carport construction starts this week. Have been planning these and more "shop upgrades" since I bought the thing in May. WAY too aggravating without a proper environment.

ohh...not to mention. The first thing I will do after receiving liftbars is to get the thing up, check/fix A/T modulator vacuum and/or valve body adjust. Damned simple thing to do in preventing becoming a partner with TT distress, but not so simple if I can't get the car off the ground. And Considering that I may need to run a new vacuum line to the modulator valve....I can just imagine trying to explain this to the local yokel shop, and even if they did understand, I can imagine the sticker shock for a simple vacuum hose install or adjustment.

those Porken bars are high on my list too. Of all the things about the 928 that drive me crazy, the inability to easily monitor/service the tranny is top of the list.
