HELP - Really Bad (Tranny went?)
Help folks - drove car home from gym (86.5, A/T), no problems, been running great. Went back out to take it out again, and as I shift into reverse to back it out of driveway, I hear a clang sound, then a grind sound, and no motion. Car is like stuck in neutral and just rolling backwards. I then shifted into drive, and grind and clang sound from torque tube/tranny area, and it again feels like neutral. Engine runs and revs fine, so I don't think it's a thrust bearing failure. When shifting back into park, it makes a grinding noise and doesn't go into park. It's like a dead tranny or a broken torque tube? Thoughts?
Also, it will have to be flat bedded from the rear tow hook. Any tips?

Three Wheelin'
If you're pulling it up a flatbed from the rear, I suggest jacking each front side first (i.e. lift, then put back down), so that the suspension is extended and gives you a little more spoiler clearance.

Drive shft connected to the CV joint to the diff - probably the bolts fell out of the CV joint - Hopefully as thats the easy fix.
Other alternative is Central SHaft (inside TT) failed.

try putting the car in park and then try to push it if it rolls then the half shaft has left the building (IE come loose) sorry used the wrong word ........to test the drive shaft you will need to be under the car wedge a screw driver against the torque converter and turn the crank pulley with a socket if this combination turns then the driveshaft is broken, or possible a flex plate has broken or a pinch bolt has come out of the one of driveshaft couplers, remove the bottom of the bell housing and check the flex plate, also check the bolts hold the rear plate to the torque converter there are 6 of them acessed through the rear bell housing cover there should be 2 rubber covers in this remove the covers and check the bolts , the car will need to be off the ground to check the drive line

Wow, Ed that sucks. You are not going to ruin your engine. But Im not sure his idea will prove anything. Its an AT the "P" locking pin is in the tranny behind the TT.. thus on the same side of the TT as the wheels. Although I dont know much about the 928 AT. Do you have LSD? if not it could even be an axil.
Get the *** off the ground, turn a wheel and see if the one on the other side turns in the opposite direction. (NON LSD) If not, look at yoru axils
as far as checking the TT.. this is not going to be so easy, the front not so bad.. remove the bell and have a peek-see... in the back I dunno? I know on my 5 spd I have a little rubber cap that come off the rear back of the TT to allow access to the bolt that connects the TT to the input shaft of the tranny. Its not a large hole. But large enough to get a flash light and see if its turning. Good Luck

Thanks Kyle. It's not an LSD. I'm not sure what to hope for other than the drive shaft and CV issue Jon mentioned above. The problem with lifting the *** end is that the car is on the end of the driveway, by the road, and it slopes with the *** end down. Thus, if I lift it to get under and do the obvious things like check the tranny fluid, the car will roll. I could try to put rr ties under each of the front wheels, but they may slide and the car will fall off the jacks and who knows what else I'll break maybe a good nights sleep will present a solution in the am...
