Post Stroker

O.K., I'll start another thread that will probably generate some controversy of some sort.

Has anyone had any experience with Performance East? They claim to have strokers to go.

Comments? Thoughts?

If your a gambler, I'd say go for it. Personally I would stick with handing the cash to Devek. They have done the research and testing on their own 928s' and know what works and what doesn't. Maybe Performace East has too but what do we know about them, their blocks or cranks?

I've checked out their Website - but have no firsthand info on the product or service that they provide.

why not have a go at building one

I would love to build one myself oneday

3 main changes to the engine:

1. scat stroker crank
2. set of custom lightweight rods
3. 2 sets of porsche 968 pistons

and hey presto: 6 Litre (6.5 with 104mm bore)

but then, you could also get custom forged pistons and lower the compession ratio and dump 10-18PSI into it from a supercharger!

should get 650 to 700HP from that, god knows how long it would last tho, hehehe

Question

What's up with the 5800 RPM rev limit on the Performance East cranks?

I contacted Devek about my '82, and I received a reply from Susan, indicating they only used their Stroker kits on race cars and newer '87 and up street cars.

morgan,

Just to keep the communications perfectly clear:

Susan stated that in house strokers were 87 and later, however, there are at least 5 or more
DEVEK strokers kits powerering S1, S2, S3's. Those running have aftermarket fuel and ign systems.

The devek 6.5 setups produce too much hp for a no hassle application on early 928!

Marc
Devek

She also stated in her reply that we will do early strokers, but they will have to have aftermarket fuel and ign management systems!

Ok here is the email I sent to Performance East:John,

Some of us here at the Rennlist are curious about your stroker
engines
and cranks. Do you address the crank and it oiling characteristics?
What
type of piston coating is used? Do you sleeve the bores or keep the
stock
bore? Do you always require a core return? Do you have any customer
testimonials that you can share with us? We been having some running
debates over superchargers, turbos, and stroker kits, and have gotten
feedback from most of the vendors regarding these subjects. Would you
mind
responding and I may I post that response on our web forum?

Sincerely,

And here is his responce:

Yes the oiling issue is addressed on the crank, however if you build the
engine yourself, there are other oiling issues to be addressed in the
block. I use a Scatt billet crank. Strokers, supercharger, and turbo
provide different characteristics and a customer should choose a
solution right for them. The engine compartment is tight on a 928 and
the Timing belt needs looking after. An SC makes and already difficult
maintenance item much harder. To each their own.

Sounds like he isn't to found of SC's or TC's. Seems to think it would make doing the timing belt too difficult. Isn't very forth coming about his product.

Strange that a motor builder would give such a short answer and snivel about the belt. It doesn't sound like they want to sell anything, nor that they would be very helpful during a project.

I vaguely remember this cat’s name coming up within the last year on Rennlist and someone mentioned he and his information was limited. I could be wrong but I don’t think so. I’ll try an archive search.

But all that aside…his response or lack of is puzzling.

I didn't ask about fuel management for the early models either, wonder if he has a contingency plan for that, or if that is the problem of the buyer. I'll reply to his e-mail and ask.

Well if he expects you to handle the "other oiling issues", then what should we expect?

Is that the oiling issue that pushes oil into the intake. I was doing some reading on some other cars(turbo ones) and they came with using a regular inline fuel filter instead of just a air filter for the crankcase vent. Correct me if im wrong about something.

Marc (Devek),
Thank you for the clarification, I didn't mean to post false information.
