ok so now i am getting conflicting information, can you rebuild the motors or do you only replace them?

for $100 i would just buy one, not worth the hassle to pull one apart and go parts hunting

two that I rebuilt needed new bushings and the other needed a magnet. everything else was fine. My advise is to take yours apart first and see what is wrong with it. If its the magnet that is cracked I can mail you one and you just pay for shipping. If its the bushing go to your local parts store and get one that looks like yours and just sand it down (if needed) to fit.

Seal the motor back with some epoxy glue. Question: Do you want to spend $10 on new bushing? or buy a used one for about $50 that may fail the next week? or buy a new one for $100 or so?

'does the fan blade seperate from the motor?" YES

The price for new is $200

I think i may just avoid the hassle and go with that then just resell mine as a noisy fan on ebay

actually its not even that its noisy, its just noisier then the other one

Ryan,

Did you contact Rich Sanders (Richard S) about the $75 ones from his rollover donor? Two fans and the whole fan console included.

Dr Bob

I forgot about Saabs..... and Volvos - yet more candidates.

Finding a low miles wreck - maybe not that important - 928 S4+ fans work very hard compared to the fans in more mundane cars (perhaps not true if you are considering a swap in from a Saab turbo that has lived all it's life in Arizona).

My iniitial investigations in this area (about 6 years ago) started by swapping the fan from my Daily driver (A GM with 250,000 miles on the clock) into the SE - The SE fans were both noisy with bearings as rough as a bears backside the GM fan by comparison was silky smooth.

What also may be worth considering is identifying another car manufacturers fan motor that bolts straght in, and buying a new one.

When I did this exercise 6 years ago the new Porsche Fan was £220 ($450USD) from the dealer. The same fan motor from the GM dealer was exactly half that price.

Default electric fan

motors are easily rebuildable , the bearing is a local available at any bearing supplier paid $5 here in oz , graphite on the bush & you have a new unit , given of course the mechanical condition of the magnet & bushes are serviceable ,however very interested in an equivalent to replace the original as a new unit from Pcb here in Brisbane is $550 .

I contacted Rich about the fans. Turns out someone else wanted just the shroud, so Rich is parting it and sending me the fans and the shroud to someone else. Makes two people happy.

Thanks for the heads up Bob.

Thanks for the offer for your Roger.

Pictures please. The bearings are mounted with rivets in the housing. Easy replacement?

Dont have pictures , but all you do is drill out the rivets & replace them when you have finished

OK
The next person who rebuilts one of these should provide some pictures and numbers for the bearings. I got a used unit from Roger, no problems..

again...digging up old threads. I spun my fans by hand and one definitely has a bearing noise.

I havent taken this apart yet as it is pretty low on my list with winter coming along and having a broken superchager belt. But did any one come up with a bearing number?

from reading it looks like someone mentioned you simply drill out the rivets on the motor case?

Any new info on this stuff.

Its amzing really, i look at posts over time that mention wierd noises coming from the engine....under car...rear axle... etc etc..

fan bearings...a broken baffle in an intermediate exhaust....a loose protection plate on my tranny fluid resivour. These are just a few things that i have found that "rattle" or present a weird noise when tapped or shook in the last few months. ...just an FYI.

Tony,

The bearings are the same size as used on skateboards. Real easy. How-to and parts discussion on this thread...
