Default Is it possible to rebuilt S4+ twin fans?

I am curious if i can replace a bearing in one of the two radiator fans for my car.

One of them is a little noisy and although the fan seems to function fine, i would like to eliminate the noise.

I noticed in the PET that Porsche sells what looks like the entire fans blades themselves. I assume the PN includes the motor which is hidden behind the center of the fan. This maybe the way I go if i cannot simply replace a single bearing or whatever it could be thats the source of the noise.

Ive never really taken a look at the fans, so maybe someone that has can chime in on wether or not its possible to break the fan down and find a bearing that can be removed and replaced. I am pretty confident that if there is a bearing in there that you can find a replacement for it. What that bearing is, what its part number is is anyone guess at this point.

Any ideas on how to proceed on this latest project?

I am going to call tomorrow and get a price for the individual fans

PN: 928 624 145 00 "Blower"

If i can get one for less then $200 I may just buy it. Otherwise I will probably take one apart at some time or another and get to the bottom of this noise.

Ryan check the fans carefully one of them might be rubbing on either the left side the front of the lower rad hose on the right the AC line, shine a light down the back of the rad to see how close your hoses are to the back of the fans if either one is close then they can be repositioned slightly the rad by loosening the hose clamps and the AC line by bending it very carefully

Tried this before, there is no way to lubricate or replace the bearings in the fan motors.
Open your old ones up after you changed them....

Ryan,

I assume that means you're going to call Sunset...

Don't know anything about if you can replace the bearing, so don't know if this helps, but had one of the fans go out on my GT and ended up replacing it with a used one acquired here locally for about $100 IIRC. Has worked fine, but when the one fan initially went out, the car definitely ran a LOT hotter, really concerned me. Well, at least it ran a lot hotter here in AZ...

So, I would recommend taking care of it before it completely gives up. It's amazing the volume of air both fans move together, but one by itself is not enough!

I just found one on Ebay coincidentally. Priced @ $266. That maybe good, but I dont know, yes i will call Oregon tomorrow for a price. In the past i have almost jumped the gun on Ebay deals, only to find them cheaper from the source. I almost bought clutch and brake pads for like $20 on Ebay, i found they were only $3 new so i saved $14 on that one. We will see how much the thing is. If $250 is what they cost then i wont bother at this point. My fans both work good, its just that one is noisy.

Mrmerlin, I have checked for obstructions in the fans, but i do remember when the assembly was out i spun the drivers side by hand and it was noisier then the other.

Schocki: Your post is exactly what i was looking for. I was curious if anyone had done this before and it appears that its not possible. Thanks. If i do decide to replace it while it still works, I will probably just resell it as opposed to taking it apart. I guess its all dependant on what the thing will cost.

Thanks for the response

I want to avoid an aftermarket fan and shroud. I really dont like any of the ones that ive seen at all. Although if i buy a turbo i wont have a use for the factory intake ducts, i may get a newer type fan, perhaps the quieter twisted blade variety. I know those arent so noisy, but I think the dont pull as much air as the straight blades, so that too may not be an option.

I doubt there is a non Porsche supplied fan that will mount to the fan shroud casing without major modification.

This is really just an annoyance more than anything and a very minor one at that. I need to finish the stereo first, then do the interior refresh before i get into this crap.

Again, THANKS

thanks for the heads up Bob

I am going to see what a new one costs first. I could be suprised it could be under $100. You never know, it wouldnt be the first time i said "Wait, how much, you sure thats part number XXXXXXXX? OK I'LL TAKE 3! "

Ryan

Go take a wander around your nearest junkyard. I would look at Euro cars and US GM cars - or more specifically their cooling fan motors.

GM (Vauxhall or Opel) in Europe seems to use exactly the same Bosch fan motor in most of it's model range - as does GM (Holden) in Australia and I am nearly sure that the Holden Commodore here (in OZ) has a Chevy or similar cousin in the US.

Audi BMW and MB have also used the same fans on some models.

I replaced both my 88SE fans with fans from a GM cavalier (2.0L fwd 5 door hatch) in the UK for about $20US per fan. Even the blades were the same. The only difference was the electrical connector, but 5 minutes with a soldering iron sorted that out.

I should have added , the Holden Commodore is a 4 door saloon with either 3.8V6 or 5.0, 5.7 or 6.0V8s - I think the 5.7 is the one they refer to as the Gen III ? uf that helps narrow down which GM US model it might be.

"Is it possible to rebuilt S4+ twin fans?"

Did that with both fans on my 1988 (brushes were bad) and one on my 1989 (had to replace 1 magnet).

Ryan--

There was a thread a few years ago about Saab fans sharing bearings/brushes/etc with our fans. This supports the idea that other cars might be a source of parts supply for you. Finding a low-miles wreck that has the fan motors intact (don't need much else...) shouldn't be too tough.
