You can always have it towed out and delivered to another place, particularly if they haven't started the job.

More than the $$$, from all I've read it's a rare dealer I'd trust to do the job right. It's been half a long career since any dealer had a 928 from Porsche for sale.

I hope that they will recheck the tenision for free after 1500 miles, I wouldnt pay that much for this job, you could almost have a party at your house and have a few friends do this with you, also you might be up a creek with a NEW factory water pump as it may have been sitting on the shelf for a long time this may lead to early seal failure , At the shop we have a had very good luck with the fresh rebuilt pumps IE fresh seals

I just went over to scots house on saturday, he was spewing water out of his pump. ( thats why he was down on water after each event). we had the pump out and the new one in just after lunch! about 3.5hours. sure, we have no AC, smog pump, and driven fan, but how long does that stuff take to loosen. I didnt even touch the alternator or p/s pump, and just bent the center cover back toward the radiator to have full access to all the pump bolts. say it costs twice as much time. you get the picture.
and i did it for free! thats what the 928 brotherhood is for! keep the 928s running!

The full job, with rollers, water pump, selas, tensioner rebuild, etc, is a long day working by yourself. Complications like broken bolts add a lot to that estimate. At the dealer, they quote you a book rate, with a fudge factor that takes into account the likelyhood there will be "problems" for the guy that's learning the job. Might be 50-100% They also add in all the possible bits that might be needed even if they don't have them o plan on installing them. In case the break something or find something already broken.

Most likely is that they really don't want teh work, so they propose a high price that guarantees that they will make their normal rates no matter what happens. They warranty their work too, so they need to figure in some likelyhood that some related system like the parking brake shoes will need attention during the warranty period... You get the idea.


FWIW, I think my parts bill for my last full-tilt TB effort was in the $1k neighborhood. That included all the hoses, belts, ignition caps/rotors, bearings, rollers, tensioner rebuild parts. On top of that, add in coolant, oil, filters, water wetter, paper towels. etc. Toss in a couple casual days of working on it to get it all just right, including making the video, at my normal commercial billing rate. Suddenly that dealer price doesn't seem high at all!

He generously offered in my other thread but I don't know if I want to bother him with the whole ordeal although I wouldn't mind taking him up on his offer to take a good look at the belt/system to see the shape it's in.

Well, if you decide to have a TB party on a Sunday, count me in. I've never done it, would love to learn and help where I could. I am local, so at least thats one plane ticket less to buy.

We IL-WI-IN-MI guys might benefit from a how-to weekend sometime. I'd be happy to host such an event and make sure that our Saturday evening has some fun and suds to it.

All the input here is truly helpful. I am going to speak with the dealer this afternoon and make sure to get some further specifics.

I agree with Mark K that there needs to be some solidarity amongst those of us who own 928s and that we should help one another out when possible. This thread is yet another example of that.
