Default SharkTuner pricing

You may have seen from the "SharkTuner rental" thread/poll that the question was raised about the affordability of the SharkTuner versus market price.

So this at present is a hypothetical question - if the price of a LH2.3 LH & EZK SharkTuner could be brought down to 950 USD how many people would seriously consider buying one ?

The original SharkTuner was perceived as a device for the major supercharger/turbo charger/stroker kit and specialist tuners to buy and use.

The expected market was perhaps a dozen units. The units are essentially hand made. In the event I have sold more than that, quite a few to private owners.

To bring down the price to the 950USD target we would simplify the design to only include MY87 and onwards. There would be no Aux inputs for datalogging and additional external sensors.

Whether I will risk the large capital outlay of bulk parts purchase, plus tooling for machine placed assemble of the boards I don't know yet.

What I need to know is the likely market for such a device.

So, over to you, is the answer 25, 50 or more ?

IF the state of Kalifornia does not pass AB616 which would require me to get smogged annually, AND I can get my beast to the point where I feel that it's fully up to snuff, THEN I will purchase a SC setup, and would purchase an ST as well. My intent would be to ST it to get a good safe map and then probably not do much other tweaking, so a price point of $950 would be great.

I'm commited to buying one, however I'm looking at a LH2.2- EZF version upgrade as well.

I agree - the ability to keep everything stock and still have the advantages of a 3rd party system (with working knock sensors) for under $1,000??

I'd pay that for a system to tune the L-Jet cars.

I'm upgrading my '84 Euro to take advantage of this tech. Unfortunatetely, a simplified, cost effective version would not work for me with an LH2.2.

I'm tempted, but for $900 I'd have to have the above features you'd be deleting to come up with a lower priced version.

John, I absolutely agree with Sterling. I don't think most of us really even know what the sharktuner is truely capable of - a marketing opportunity. For instance, we know a good x-pipe can gain about 25 hp on a S4 and plenty have happily forked over about half of what you're talking about. I think you'll find plenty of sales at $950, especially if you begin promoting better what it can do. For example, you might consider a separate weekly thread on how to use different features of the tuner or a 'Tuner for Dummies' DVD that you could sell as well. Lots of potential here. Package deal for a Scanner & Sharktuner, etc...

when you say no external sensors, I don't know what all comes with the normal sharktuner, not sure many others do either....

$950 sounds good tho.
Hi Sterling,
The LH2.3 SharkTuner will data log all the normal sensor inputs that come into those ECUs, like LH water temp (Temp 2) , MAF voltage, rpm, throttle position, battery volts, A/F ratio, O2 loop, ISV loop.

For EZK - knock sensors, Hall sensor , rpm, load, throttle position, battery volts, all the things that are shown in the LH2.3 User manual. Available for download from my website.

Does that cover what you need ?

Thanks to all for comments so far.....

Harvey - does my reply to Sterling answer your requirement ? The Aux inputs at present are only available with the LH2.2 upgrade - which also apply when that version is used for LH2.3. However, very few LH2.2 have been sold, so people must be pretty happy with what the baisc LH2.3 provides.

John,
The are less SC'd '85-86 on the road. The kits were later in development. Give it time.

Though you are right, it would be a smaller niche because it only spans 2 model years.

For perspective, according to 928 Specialists site there were 9532 928s sold worldwide in 85/86, 5362 in the US; 20800 87+ sold worldwide but only 5599 in the US.

John-
You know I'd buy one. In fact, I'll send you the money today if it would help to bump me to the front of the line...

John,
Yeah, I'd send the money today as well. The price was the only thing holding me back. For $950 I'm definately in!
