Exhaust In Cabin
As I begin to shake down my project 928 it seems that one thing is leading to another. Which is to be expected. So, forgive all the posts.
I am beginning to run the car more, in the process I have noticed A FAIR AMOUNT OF EXHAUST FUMES ENTERING THE DRIVERS COMPARTMENT. Seems to be pouring in through the center AC VENT.
The small problem is AC VENT issues...not responding to the ordered flow or shut off from the control head. NO BIG DEAL. I had planned on going over the whole system of vents when I pulled the dash and replaced the control head.
THE BIG PROBLEM is...THE EXHAUST LEAK!!!!!
There is a lot that needs work on this car...I had planned to replace the exhaust head to tail...mainfold, cat, muffler. This may accelerate that plan. I would think that would solve the problem. Is it possible the exhaust may be leaking from some other place other than where it bolts to the engine? Figure the leak has to be up front. Could this be another sign of a bad head gasket?
Anything else besides the actual manifold and exhaust parts that could be causing this?
If I do replace the exhaust system up front...any cost reducing suggestions? Options may be used manifolds and cat from 928 International, aftermarket substitutes like Borla, etc.
Some of these parts are expensive new...any downside to using used evaluated parts...I guess a used CAT bothers me most. Also, concerned about warpage of used manifolds and pipes where they would bolt to the beast. Not looking to improve performance beyond the factory, looking to save a few bucks...if I can do both...GREAT.
Also, there seems to be a bit of moisture in the exhaust coming out of the muffler...hmmm. Hoping water is not getting into the engine. Seems pretty strong. Exhaust is not smoking white, blue, black or any other color. Just a bit moist to the touch. Running a whole lot of injector clean and such through the beast presently...maybe residues or incomplete combustion? Definitely burning a tad of oil though.
Ideas????

Maybe check the EGR equitment? It's located on the back side of the engine, so...
Just a thought.
btw, water is produced in the combustion of the gasoline. If you've got a small amout of water, everything is as it's suppost to be. You might not notice it with a hot exaust system, or a realy cold one. On the hot one, the water passes through as vapor, in the cold one, the water condenses and doen't make it to the rear, untill the exaust system heats up a bit.
If it's alought, things are not cool. Just to double check, see if you can find any oily residue on the coolent, or a bit of water in the oil. If you can't, don't worry about it.
Good luck.

First check your bootlid seal and adjustment. My 90 S4 had the same problem and in the end I found the leak not in front but at the boot lid seal.
Use a hose with light pressure al round the seal then open the boot and check fot any dampness inside. I turned the rubber stopper at the exhaust side in and the other one out a bit to seal it tighter on the exhaust side and my problem was solved.
