The interior courtesy lights also stay on a long time. But the odometer and trip odometer lights in the dash, as well as the small square message light between them, stay on forever! Any point to this?

I don't know about the courtesy lights, but the odometer and other digital lights stay on until you lock the doors. I figure that its Porsche's way of having you smile as you watch the miles roll up every time you leave the car.

The LCD display stays on so it can give you informational messages - if you have a fault(s) - some will be repeated when you power off... example: the tire pressure warning will again alert and tell you which wheel(s) is(are) at fault.

They stay on for a few mins max - but long enough you can refer to them after you have fed the air machine... useful idea I think.

Just a data point (or a sign that there's something wrong with my car): I have CS rims on right now and haven't bothered to jumper the RDK box. I get a pressure warning about 15-30 seconds after starting to move the car, and again every 15(?) minutes while driving, easily cancellable with a pull of the lower left steering column stalk. I do not get a pressure warning after I turn the car off.

I assumed all digi-dash cars did this... it could be fault on your car - or maybe they just didn't add this feature until a later version...

I think it stays on so one can read the odometer even after the engine has been shut-off. It seems to be important to see the odo as often as possible, because it's also the default when you turn the car on. Mine can't remember that I prefer to have my current speed displayed instead...

Oh, my odometer stays lit for at least a few minutes, maybe 5? ( I think that's what Nicole is referring to, it's early and our little one is teething, so I'm sleepless and decaffeinated this morning) I just don't get a reminder of any pressure faults. I wish I could set it to display current speed all the time too......

bigs, when you say "forever" do you mean that literally? Or that they just stay on for several minutes?

This is one of those times when exaggeration doesn't help communication. ;-)

My '89 GT does this also....... interior lights for about a minute...... digital dash for about 5 minutes.

Mine also cannot remember my preference for display information.

I went out to the garage with a stopwatch...

When I turn the car off, the interior courtesy lights stay on for 20 seconds.

(I'm not sure I understand the point of that delay either. My '06 Audi has external parking/courtesy lights that stay on for a while to sort of light your way to your destination after you exit the car. But interior lights staying on after you've left the car?? )

But the digital dash display - specifically the odometer display and the trip odometer display - stay lit for exactly 4 minutes after I turn off the ignition.

The only purpose I can figure out for this is perhaps it's meant to remind the driver to lock the car every time it's turned off. The display will shut down immediately if I lock the door.

(I don't think my car is faulty. I think it was intentionally designed to do this. I'm just not sure I understand the point of it.)

You and me both, Brian. It's a reset almost every time, unless I start it up again within a couple of minutes. Maybe the '89 GT's computer wasn't fully sorted out? Um, or maybe it's functioning as well as any 18-yr-old computer would be expected to.


Bigs - there have been a lot of developments in interior-lighting-delay design concepts in the 13 years between your cars. :-)

In both these cases it is quite as intended, The exit delay is so you can see around the car if its realy dark - as you maybe move to open hatch (or escort the lovely lady from the passeger side) etc - most cars do this. then to truncate it you lock.

If you have the ability to unlock remotely - the interior lights come on in this case too helpful - if not - at least you get to see inside the car before you actually open the door - safety issue...

The delay on the dash is to be able to note down mileage and monitor any warnings - etc... all makes sense to me. Not sure what seems so odd...
