Jim - I actually think having brake lights with a combination of incandescnet and LED responses yields the most visibly noticeable effect. If you wanted more visibility still a partially pulsing center brake light (just a few times each time the brake is activated - with timeout) gets even more attention.
There are so many cars with all LED rear lighting now that the faster response seems to have less effect on its own - just like how center brake lights helped until everyone had them and got used to them...
To me incandescents really work very very well - are reliable - and when they do blow the car will tell me!... hard to beat
Maybe your special $20 bulbs work as well - but thats a heck of a lot more $$ than a dual filament incandescent. What are you doing about the bulb monitoring for the brake lights?
LEDs sure do keep getting better though - and on new cars that does/will yield great new lights - retro-fitting is always much more of a compromise.

I agree with most of what you wrote. The center brake may "seem" passe, but it works well. A triangle has more depth than a straight line.
And I definitely can't argue cost; LED vs. Incand. What it is to me is a project to dink around with in between big projects. It help me maintain interest in getting my hands dirty.
To fix tirggering the lamp bulb warning, I will do the resistor and jumper fix that Borland used.

I've got lopsided brake lights.
One 3W luxeon multi bulby light in the right brake light. You get a bright spot in the center of the lens as the "reflector" isn't optimized for LED, even with the multi-bulb array.
But with 2 ancient tech incandescent bulbs (center and left bulb) in the brake circuit, the brake bulb out warning does not light up.
I pulse my brake pedal lots of time when I slow down or stop so it must look real wierd have the 3 lights go on off on off.
On the other hand the 1156 LED multi array bulbs I put into the rear light cluster seem to work pretty well. I put in red LED's and they seem pretty bright. Haven't disabled the tail cluster warning system yet.

For my 90' S4 turn signals, I ended up with:
-LED bulbs (like Alan says, dual filament) on the front corners,
-stock incandescent bulbs for the rear turn signal lights (single filament), and
-replaced the flasher relay euro LED flasher relay.

Jim D,
The 1157 LED's are for the multi-filament brake/park bulbs.
The 1156 LED replaces the single filament rear parking light bulbs.
