I may have an engine. Well at least part of it.

I built the short block along with the shop. since it was a joint effort, at the final stage of tighting, i thought it was not a bad idea to have the heads sit at stage 2 of tighting overnight before finishing the installation. the shop was doing some of the work and was supposed to do the final stage. I came back a week later to install the engine and assumed this was all done, as the intake was installed. BIG mistake, but the engine itself was put together without any of those variables. These kinds of things happen. we even had a close call like this with scots new 5 liter, so we pulled the pan because it wasnt written down that someone tightened and torqued the oil pick up. so, we took 30min and pulled the pan and found that it was torqued properly. this is why check lists are important during the build process.
anyway, the short block was assembled, it makes 250rwhp, no leaks and barely broken in. euro and US 4.7s are interchangeable for the older models.
its a great deal. it will save you $500 in materials and a bunch of time and labor

BTW, just to play devils advocate here. Mark K's 4.7L Euro engine that is being discussed here, was removed from the car after only running a few hours. This was after a total rebuild. The reason it was pulled was because the head gasket/gaskets were leaking due to not following a proper torque procedure. Would I be right to assume that the rest of the engine was assembled with this same attention to detail? I'm just sayin'.

As other have stated, that's a great deal Mark. For comparison the 100.5 mm pistons I purchased for my 951 were about $1400.00 US a few years back...for pistons only!

I took a 200 mile road trip yesterday to pick up a 28M 13. It came out of a car as a running engine. So I had hopes of getting a good core.
My BMW 525I Touring handled the load very well.

This was the result. It was nice to visit with my friend anyway... Remind me to slap him the next time I see him.

you have got to be kidding???
just put some new head gaskets on it and start it up
Buy my motor and be done with it. i can see $3k at first glance and a TON of work. (and mess!)
you can have a motor that looks like this and has been properly broken in as well.

Mark,
$3K sounds a little steep. If the cylinders are not rotted then spay on some Liquid Wrench, Kano or Mystery Oil and let it set. That should free up the pistons. A little inspection and you are good to go. Might want to pull the pan and check a rod bearing or two, but I will bet they are in spec too.
These engines are tougher than you think. Unless he is thinking of all out racing no big deal. Besides something else will break on the car before too many miles will pass.

You are CRAZY!! ive already put an engine that looks ten times better than this, and had it sieze up, due to unknown problems. If you know how much work it takes to put an engine in, its well worth a rebuild if is out of the car and is unknown. one thing that is known with this engine is that it looks like HELL!!
who knows what the rings look like, or the oil passages, etc. if the rings are rusted, they are not going to last too long

Here's a great screaming deal:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...090496663&rd=1
$825 delivered. The whole engine. Just add your pistons and new rings and bearings. Then you'll have a pile of spares for sale, trade and give away.
Make sure to have the crank inspected and polished.
No affiliation. Blah de blah blah.

At least they are giving some assurance the engine is good. However, for $800 you can buying a running car and have many parts left over. The 4.5 and 4.7 engines are a dime a dozen. I bought a complete 84 automatic drive line - engine and all - for $300. The guy had been trying to sell it for months and finally took my original offer.
As far as freezing, Mark, that is a function of how hard some one pushes the engine. These engines will run with handicaps well after the chassis is rotted away. Take them on the track and 15 minutes on a stock one is about it. All depends on your prescpetive.
Bill Ball called me earlier this year for George when he blew his S4 motor. George was doing 187 MPH at the time. Ever think just maybe there is a difference between tracking a car and driving it to the local Safeway to get some canned nuts?
