Hi, i'm new to rennlist and would apreciate your thoughts on the subject of paint schemes.
The bodywork on my 1986 928 S2is a bit tatty so it's heading in to the body shop for a complete strip and repaint. While it's in I'm going to add GTS rear arches, remove the side plastic strip and fit new bigger wheels (don't know which yet, although Dymags are top of the list, if I can afford them).
But I can't decide on the paint scheme! The Panzer is currently Iris blue which is a lovely pale metallic, the sensible option is repainting in this original colour. The other less sensible option I am considering is the old GULF racing scheme of light blue with a big orange stripe over the top! I am probably never going to sell this car so the effect on resale is not an issue.
My current preference is for the stripe, but am I missing something? I don't think I have seen another 928 (apart from racers) in anything other than a single colour. Loads of other cars but not 928's.
Cheers
Dave

If I had that coice I'd either stick with the original color - for pure cost reasons, because then you don't have to redo the door jams and all these areas. The other choice is to go with something that's at least somewhat close to the original color. My all time 928 favorite is Porsche cobalt blue metallic, followed by Amazon Green metallic - both are just totally awesome in the light! Both were available from '91 to '93.
I think you would get tired of any race trim - keep in mind, you don't see the real race cars every day, and for advertising purposes they have to be flashy, sometimes even ugly, to get people's attention. But too much attention can go the wrong way...

I agree with Nicole and Jim,
To paint it another color, where do you stop... door jambs, engine compartment, hatch, etc. If not, close examination will reveal the refurb.
The alternatives like Jim's beauty, and I am sure Nicole's picks would be awesome. But, it costs to make a seamless transition to make it look original.

Somebody (forgot who) has a white euro that they put blue stripes on the hood and sides - looked fantastic. I have a copy but it is a 2.5meg bmp - too big for me to post.
Actually my car has been repainted the original color and it looks great.

That sounds like Bill Meierhoefer's shark. It's a pretty nice race car, prepared by Devito's. I don't remember it having stripes on the sides tho.

I recall seeing several years ago a photograph of a white 928 with an orange stripe. Car looked awesome!
For your information it also had flashing lights on roof and was used by medical staff as a first responder vechicle at European racing events.

I think your color is Porsche Silver Metallic. Here is another example of Porsche Polar Silver Metallic. Please note blue tint in paint(similar to a Polar ice cap).

Guys,
I do not visit your board often but seeing as the old Polar Silver discussion has popped up here as well I thought, hey why not, share the info with you guys as well.
Porsche produced many shades of silver. However the three main ones are
92E Polar Silver Metallic
92M Polar Silver Metallic (WB) this is a water based paint available on 1991 models of 928s and up.
990 Silver Metallic.
To find exactly what you colour code is you have to check the data label for the code and I have no idea where this is on a 928 and somewhere there is also a colour code label part number 928 701 167 04. On this label you will find the colour code and colour description.
Ciao,

Dave,
I saw a 911 in the classifieds of 911&Porsche world 9/00 issue(the one that contains the 928 buyers' guide) which is painted the Gulf livery exactly as you described(Blue with the orange stripe) and the car actually looks quite fetching.
Eric 86 951-for sale.

Talk about coincidence, this picture of a 356 in gulf colours was in November's "911 & porsche world". and here was I thinking I was being origional!
I take your point about the problems with where do you stop when changing colour. So I think I am going to take your advice and stick with the origional colour, the iris blue metallic (which I have just found out was only avaliable as a colour choice for one year so it's fairly rare).
However I still like the idea of a stripe! so I am going to have a think about what will work over the iris blue. A wide black stripe perhaps?
Thanks
Dave
