Default "First" Concours...

I attended the Founders Potomac Chapter PCA annual picnic/ car show yesterday- Great event- Lots of sharp Porsches( & a lone Ferrari 308 GTS), Nice people, & good food. Unbeknownced to me, my wife entered me in the Concours class, and let me know after it was already official. Sunday morning- up @ 6 am , cleaning, vacuuming, dressing, polishing almost every square inch,- ( 3 hrs. later) "Panzer" was looking pretty good. My wife followed me in her Jag with the kids to the event. The guy at the gate was very enthusiastic upon seeing my S4, and even commented that two other "Sharks " ( his word) were also registered. I parked next to a nice Boxster S, and another guy in a silver 87 S4 auto pulled into the slot on my right. Okay- my first concours- three judges- a timed inspection ( 5 min- I think, per car), and a few questions. I didn't even have any inclination that I'd even be in contention- not when you consider the twenty-odd cars also competing- some of which included some lovely 356's, a 930 Turbo, various Box's & two Caymen-S, two 996 Turbos, misc. Targas, SC's, 993 4S, etc. About an hour later everyone had gathered under the pavillion for the result announcements. Starting with third place... ( wasn't even paying attention, second place... guy comes forward, gets his plaque, a handshake and his picture taken, again clapping politely. " AND ... First place in the All Concourse Division, with a beautiful black( my ears perked up)...1988 ( my heart skipped a beat) 928 S4 5 speed (suddenly realizing that mine was the only one fitting that description) Dave Lillard". I was floored! I hopped up on stage and posed with my plaque with a big ol' ****- eatin' grin on my mug. We forgot to bring the camera( DOH!), But you might see me in an upcoming issue of the Potomac's Magazine "Der Vorgander".

Congrats and nice job!

Now post an obligatory pic of the trophy with the car!

PS: Once you're bitten by the bug it's only downhill. You'll start noticing and doing things little by little to increase your chances of being on stage again and again.

Yup, you gotta post a pic of the plaque on the car.

Congrats. Now take that sheet of paper with the stuff they marked points off of, and have a blast fixing them.

Good work sir, and tell the wife thanks.

DANG!!

I was supposed to go and yes I was registered. My wife wasn't feeling to good so I in turn stayed home and watched the kids. Missed my oppertunity to meet a fellow rennlister as well as PCA Potomac member. Last year at Porsche Fest, I got 3rd place in the peoples choice. Looks like they like 928's

Great job and congratz on the win! Just be glad that I wasn't there afterall that plaque would have my name on it, JK :P I remember Chamilka's S4 and it was in great shape, IMO nicer than mine. We really do need a picture though. So get on it!

BTW, do you know all of the points that are assessed on the judging? I would love to have a copy of the judging sheet.

Also the silver S4 should have been Chamilka. Nice guy, met he and his wife last year at the 928 Frenzy on friday night. Gosh I miss our GTG's I just can't seem to get to any these days.

I saw in June that the easiest way to win a Concourse is in the "unrestored" division. There are so few 928s with original paint that are otherwise sound that I had no competition. I made the decision on that spot that I wasn't going to repaint mine (it's not that bad anyway). But my problem with Concourse's is that you really have to be **** to compete at the highest levels. The guy who won the whole unrestored division drove to/from the event with all the edges of his 911 taped up so the wouldn't get dirty. I can see doing that driving to the event, but back home too? It's clear he spends all of his time obsessing about it. I'd rather drive mine.

Using blue tape on the edges is also used to avoid rock chips. It's true one can become very obsessive once you start down the concours path. You really need to have two or three cars. One DD, one fun driver and one show car and sunday nice weather driver.

I will say though that a true concours car not only looks new but also has the mechanicals to back it up and it is a treat to drive a "Like New" old car.

If you started preparing at 6 AM the day of the Concours and you place first (or placed at all) you must keep your ride in VERY good condition. As has been stated here already, competition at the highest levels of PCA concours is **** (understatement) and difficult to comprehend. I have known people who purchased new Porsches, and never drove them. They simply took them home and all apart to "improve on new" and then trailered them to concours with no more than the factory test miles on them.........and didn't win.

Panzer
Be careful.....concours is addictive......next thing you know you'll be a "Q-tip wielding fanatic" like the rest of them... As much as I understand concours....I gotta admit it is more fun DRIVING a 928...than polishing it!!!

Thanks guys- I think I'll quit while I'm ahead. I do drive my car weekly, and occasionally track it, too. I try to keep it maintained, as opposed to letting it get out of hand, and trying to get in back into shape. The car didn't look like this when I bought it. On the contrary- I bought it sight unseen, had it shipped up from Tampa, and felt a twinge of disapointment when I first saw it. Many hours and dollars later she looks pretty tight. I'd much rather drive the hell out of it, than wipe it down with a diaper.

Congrats!

Best I ever did was second in class for my 78 MGB and I didn't even know I was in the running untill someone came yelling for me to get my **** up there. Great when you take home a prize - even better when it's unexpected!

Found a link to some photos of the event, Spotted John Lewis' OB, Chamika's S4 and your S4 as well.

Looks like there are some award ceremony pics as well.

Way to go Dave. Next year, head down to Richmond for the Shenandoah Region Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM), then I'll have some competition in the front-engine, water-cooled class.
