Default taking door panel off, what else to check?

no, not asking how, I did the search and think I got it all down
Seems I should order new clips for the door panel before I start, as they will need to get replaced, I assume any of the big 3 would have those.

Is there anything else I should take care of while the panel is off? Drivers side mirror is a bit loose, so that the reason for doing this, but anything else that would be good to check or replace would be helpful.

Hey Art_z,

Do your windows rattle? Might want to get some rollers and/or those felt things.

Also, check that the drain holes are clear. The door is designed to drain when it rains and if they get plugged up, it could rust. Lastly, drag a magnet along in there. My driver door had a bolt, two nuts, and two of those things that are used to hold the felt pads in place. I never heard them rattling, and I found them by accident so I pulled them out.(my car is lighter now) .

Inspect the roller and felts of the window mechanism.........R&R as required. Also, has the door handle been replaced.......if not good time to do it.

BTW............the mirror is held in place by a bolt that passes through the base and is accessible if you pivot the mirror and remove the little gromet.

Hey Art the mirror is attached from the outside just give the mirror head a twist and it should reveal the base , you will see one allen screw that holds things together, if the mirror head is loose on the base then you may have to remove the mirror to tighten the securing spring/screw that holds the mirror to the base, get a full set of new push pins, and see if the window guides need a fresh piece of felt applied , add some grease to the window winder workings, clean the connections to the window motor, and buy a hi quality clear shower curtain, this can be used to reline the inner door and it will help to keep water off the inner door panel, and it will last the life of the car, it can be attached either with glue or HI quality 3M package tape, dont forget to push/cut the plastic into the door slots on the bottom so it routs water away from the bottom of the door panel, and if you have speakers add a piece to the top of the speaker so water wont ruin the cone, the door is made of aluminum , and on the older cars the weather strip is pressed onto a ridge along the bottom of the door you may need to get some zinc chromate as the WX seal will possibly cause corrosion due to the fact that the WX strip is made of steel, after refinishing this edge try adding some silicone grease to the inner groove of the WX strip this should help it keep out water, and try to wash out or vacuum out the inner door bottom so the drain holes are clear

This project will be coming up for me soon...

Q: How many door panel clips are there per side? White or black or does it matter?

if your removing the door panel you might want to invest in some new black clips that hold the door panel in place.

Jager makes a door open kit and Nicole from hooked on cars sells them, she is a Rennlist member. To fix the base mount twist the mirror head slowly and it will reveal the base setting screw, you can remove t6he screw and check out whats underneath/clean things up then replace it, add a bit of grease to the hold down screw it may already be rusted

You might want to do some sound deadening while you've got the panel off. That's on my To Do list and I understand it makes a big difference.

Replacing the door arrestors is a piece of cake when you have the panels off and the parts (arrestor, base, pin, seals) per door cost maybe $30. I just did this and what a difference it makes!

NJ Shark,

My driver's window does indeed rattle as you mentioned. I searched 928intl.com for the roller and felt guides you mentioned and came up with these two items:

p/n 928 537 085 03: "Stop" in Porsche part guide, "Felt Window Guide" on 928intl.com
p/n p/n 928 537 918 00 & 928 537 917 00: "bolt" & "roller" in part guide, "Window Roller kit" (p/n WRK) on 928intl.com

Are these the parts you suggested replacing to fix the rattle?

you might want to coat the bottom inside of the door and the metal outer panel with one of those wax/oil type sprays to stop rusting; galvanised metal has zinc as a sacrificial material but when it is all sacrificed....

Check the wires where they come through the door, my passenger side window stopped working when the door wore through the wire.
