That commercial was kind of a joke, but it makes you wonder??? if it really happened, how is it possible? does slick 50 really work???

Yep, scotty White's machines really haul. by the way, in this car, he came to our national SCCA event at laguna seca and ran in our race. He ran a 1:38, both him and Cincy Lux (the other team mate of scotty) they used to run vets, and now they are vipers. i was only 2 seconds off their times in a car 20 years older and down 200hp!! (but 500lbs lighter! )

I think i saw some times in the 2:28 for T1 guys, a couple of 360 challenge ferraris, and a couple of vets . 2:28 to 2:30. remember, i try to calabrate my times with the speed Touring cars, which keep on getting faster. I used to be a top Speed Touring car (timewise ) now, im lucky to post times of the mid pack. Still those guys are running 1:37 to 1:39 at laguna and 2:27 to 2:29 at Road america. wow, just noticed its just about 1 min longer at road america.
I got to get back there to redeem myself with some decent tires.

I think royal purple is good stuff too, from what ive heard. my only beef with mobil one is the stats of blown 928 engines on the stuff, and my own experience to see the oil pressure drop when hot. Those are really my only data points for making my decision not to use Mobil 1 (besides tearing down a 170k mile engine that was using amzoil and redline to see near perfect bearing surfaces) as soon as someone does a 260F temp test on the oil and comes up with contradicting information of how "good" an oil Mobil 1 is, ill keep using the other stuff. Just by the stats alone, its cheap insurance to not use it!

mk

by the way, no plans yet for an oil cooler. However, with the new RENNLIST 928 group sponsored stroker engine, i may consider some new cooling options.
Also, im guessing on my temps, as im using my old 5 liter engine with the radiator cooling system as the basis. Scot is using my temp sensing system and wont give the stuff back! he is seeing sub-280F temps and he is runng hotter water temp than me too, plus he has no oil cooler. my old car ran 270ish on the hottest of race days, so i suspect, the holbert car is in the same range. Ill double check this month when i steal my oil temp gauge stuff back from scot

I plan to send my current oil into Blackstone after a few thousand miles to log my own data. I'm running Royal Purple in two of my cars right now. It was on sale at the local NAPA for less than Mobil 1. Picked up a few cases.

I remember that commercial!! What a joke.

I forgot Scotty B White's record lap was in a Viper. IIRC there was a vette or two this year that came damn close to that time.

Mark,
Any plans to run a larger / external oil cooler any time soon? 280 degrees seams a bit high for any oil.

IIRC that Slick50 or Zmax or whatever it was commercial said that they had drained all the oil out of the engine and were running it "with just the protection of Slick 50!" What they didn't say was that they had filled the crankcase with Slick50 in leu of oil. So they were sorta right... sorta not!

But it was on TV, so it must be true!

You have got to be xxx'ing me! really? Slick 50 is really mainly just 30weight oil, so that wouldnt be much of a test! Anyway, i recall that they drained the oil and drove it empty with no oil and just the film of slick50 left on the moving parts.

It was either Duralube or Prolong with the Viper / Unser commercial:

thats right!

I think quaker state, owner of slick 50 was sued for false claims and lost.
I read that they did some track event where all the oil was drained out of several cars ,and the slick 50 car ran for many more laps than the untreated cars that siezed up after a lap. Ive also heard that scientific tests showed increased wear when using these products. Its so easy to see how things can marketed and sold

I think the biggest farce of all time, is the sale of air filters to save gas. even our government (EPA) advises air filter changes to keep fuel economy up! Who are these idiots??? Ive already proved that a clogged air filter produces the greatest fuel economy!

Hacker - what grade of RP did you end up with? Likely to use XPR 10w-40 next change (if my Pop will remember to order it).

I'm a Duralube fan...Desert H2O cooler 2-smoker's. Saw cooler temps, smoother shifting and less engine noise to boot!! Overall, ~4yrs of racing in Nevada heat with consistent results 125's and 250's. Not sure how well it would work in the 928, although on the commercial they drained the oil AND coolant and it ran just fine

I think the guys at Blackstone tell you whatever you want to hear. When I had an analysis there two years ago they poo-poo'd boutique oils as a waste of money.

I spoke to one of the older guys there that seemed to have a lot of engine and racing engine knowledge. talk to Billy next time. He seemed to see it all. recommended more frequent oil change interval if racing, and laughed at Mobil 1 as it, in his words, has marketed itself well.
