How much oil in r12 system
I have not found a definitive answer, for an '87 with rear air, how much refrigerant oil do I need? Need 1200g of r12, that I found in the WSM.

Volume 4 page 87-90 of the WSM shows 280 +/- 20 cc total system oil regardless or rear air. This dropped to 120cc with the 10 cylinder (Nippondenso 10PA20) compressor in 1990. Page 87-103 shows the distribution of the oil per component. If you did not do a flush, some oil remains in the evaporator and condenser. A tiny amount goes in the drier. If this is a new/resbuilt compressor, check how much was put in the compressor by the rebuilder. Some load the compressor with the full system amount, as they presuming a flush has been done. The WSM mentions this on 87-103.

If you have leaked refrigerant, then those replacement quantites based on component repairs are no longer valid. There are plenty of places in the lines too that the lubricating oil can hang out. Even if you invert the compressor and drain all oil, a significant amount will be trapped.
That's why flushing the lines is important not only to remove particles, but to remove the lubricating oil. That way, you won't be adding too much oil.
Since the oil is imersed in the refrigerant and circulates throughout the system, too much oil reduces the efficiency of the system, not enough causes premature compressor failure.
