I've been looking for my first 928 and I was hoping those of you who have experienced the joy of finding the right one could share some advice that could help with the hunt.

Be careful you don't accidentally buy your second one too

Here's my top 5:

1. Test drive as many as you can reasonably get to. if the first one seems awesome, go drive another to make sure it actually is.

2. Don't fork over the cash until you've had it checked over by a mechanic who knows 928's specifically. Get recommendations from people here or other local 928 groups for a suitable mechanic.

3. Decide whats important to you, and be prepared to make sacrifices in other areas of the car, unless you're spending big $'s.

4. Make sure you have a budget set aside for post-purchase work that will need doing - the safety net will save a lot of frustration if something goes wrong during the first few months of ownership.

5. Read everything you can here on Rennlist

My top 3 tips:

Under no circumscances buy a 928 without having a 928-expert do a proper pre-purchase inspection.

Read as much as you can - including the "New Visitor" thread.

Another good source of information is Dave Hemmings' Porsche 928 Buyer's Guide, which is less than $20.

Its a nice looking car.. but you'd better answer the question of which 928 you're after first

Choose what shape first, between:
OB (original/old bodystyle) 78-86
S4/GT shape 87-91
GTS 93-95

Then second choice is:
automatic vs. manual gearbox (hotly debated subject.. just ask Roger )

Then start looking for the car you want

I am looking at an 81 Euro, auto, no sunroof. VERY Nice interior, exterior a 7 or 8. My preference would be the 87 5 speed for sale on the site, but being a rookie is the torque tube r/r needed ( i would need to get from CA to NJ) or the 147k mileage a show stopper?

Color me nervous.

My advice:

Be Patient.

There is no need to be hasty in purchasing any 928. Sure, you could get lucky, but you'll more likely be rewarded for taking your time to learn about these cars and making an informed purchase decision.

You'll always find the right car for the right price. There are many 928s in roughly equivalent condition at roughly equivalent prices. They don't sell like hotcakes, either.

Be Patient.

Euros! The rare grey market 928s with more power and less parts availability than their US counterparts. Tasty indeed!

FYI: mileage showing on a Porsche is not to be trusted without documentation, especially if it's really MILES on a Euro car that came from the factory with a Kilometers reading. But the most common cause is pushing the trip-reset button while the car is moving, it breaks the odometer.

147K is not a lot, these are long-legged and long-lived machines (if taken care of properly).

I don't know that that's been proven. I think the makeup of the grease they used and the material that little plastic gear were made out of are just incompatible. It turns the teeth to jelly over time.

So Don, where are you located?

I'm in Point Pleasant and I recently found another owner in Freehold. We've been working on our cars together for a few weeks and I wouldn't mind meeting up if you'd like to talk cars, I'm sure Adam wouldn't either.

Are you going to work on it yourself or do you plan to pay someone to do it? I think there is a huge divide in the 928 community between these two. Not in the people, just in the approach to the car you want. I can't recommend anyone to work on it since I do my own work, but there are people around if you can get the car to them that might be able to help out. I think one or two are in PA.

You've got very specific interests, that might take a little longer to find and purchase, but I'm sure it can be done.

There's also a couple in North Jersey: Kevin and Leslie, I think they have a Euro or two so you might want to look them up.

My advice:
1. Become a member here

3. Get the CD set from Jim Morehouse
4. Read the newbie FAQ page here (really, I just read it again and found some things I'd missed the first time)
5. Drive a few 928s to get a feel for them if you never have.

I'm hoping to put together a 'Sharks at the Beach' GTG sometime in September. You should keep an eye on the board and plan to attend whether you find yours in the meantime or not.

BTW- As you can tell by my sig, high milers don't scare some of us. These cars can be expected to go 300k+miles if maintained. And a rebuilt engine isn't that hard to come by.
