Thanks Don and Jim,
Hey would you happen to know why there is a 928 engine series jump over the years.
78-79: M28.03, 230hp, 8.5:1, CIS
80 : M28.13, 231hp, 9.0:1, AFC-L
81-82: M28.15, 231hp, 9.0:1 AFC-L
83-84: M28.19, 242hp, 9.3:1 AFC-L
on and on
Were the gaps for the Euro engines.
I did notice some odd stuff I assume it had to do with cams and ignition mapping.
The 83/84 although they jumped from4474cc to
4664cc and there was a noticeable jump in the compression the max. hp was reached at the early models 5250rpm.
Is there an engine/tranny book out there somewhere with some background on the 928 engine developement?
thanks
keep em' rolling

Bryan-
Don't care what you say, I still believe it's a '85 euro. Interesting stuff, though. I'd like to see one of those "siamese" distributors. Now, what do you know about '90 GT EZK-LH wiring intricacies?

Bryan,

I have a Euro 928 with factory front and rear sidemarkers or at least they look factory. I have always considered myself lucky because my front and rear sidemarkers are flush with the body and aren't the ugly add-on type you see on many euro versions.

Donald - I agree with you completely. It's an '85 Euro. That was my point.

Jim - There are some Euro 928s with nice looking sidemarkers. You are quite lucky if you have factory-style sidemarkers. But sidemarkers were US/Canada only items, and most importers did a really crappy job of adding them. The height of importer laziness was not adding them at all, which I think is the most desireable. What's interesting is that if you look at a 928 from the side, the rear light is plainly visible. So I don't know why the factory added sidemarkers. There are plenty of US version cars that have sidemarkers incorporated into the headlight or turnsignal housing (which is also plainly visible), and the rear light cluster. I guess Porsche just enjoyed stamping out those different fenders and quarterpanels.

On the MSDS headers - I suspect they were put on the car in conjunction with a complete exhaust system, yes? My contention is that stock Euro manifolds feeding a nice high performance exhaust is about the same as headers and an exhaust. Although I am not speaking from experience...yet...

Also, I'm talking about the '84-'86 Euro only - although I don't think the exhaust manifolds changed from the earlier 4.7 Euros. The US manifolds were much smaller and more restrictive. My knowledge on this subject came from a guy with an '85 Euro who did ALL the exhaust stuff - headers, early 4-valve manifolds, other headers, and after dyno testing each setup decided that there wasn't much to be gained from the headers alone over the Euro manifolds. The exhaust system itself yielded big gains - downpipes back.

I know nothing about 4-valve 928s. I know a lot about one extremely rare and narrow segment of a rare car. Like a PhD on the '84-'86 Euro.

Bryan-
I know we agree, just that I had said it (also) twice & taking a poke at the thread in jest. Enjoyed your detailed analysis-I had read about the headlight leveling and did not realize it was euro only.

Ok so we're in violent agreement on what that car is. Cool.

Theory on the two VINs: Some states allow a non-US car to be titled under its original VIN, and some create their own VIN and assign it to the car. I think this car has a state-assigned VIN. So you look at the build plate on the car and see one VIN, and look at the title and see another. Hence the confusion. To make matters even more hilarious and/or irritating, the state-assigned VIN is often placed on a cheesy sticker that's put on the door jamb or somewhere where it promptly falls off. This creates much head scratching when you take the car in for inspection and they try and look the car up in the state's database with the original VIN. Try and explain the situation to the glue-sniffing dropout manning the inspection computer.

Cool

Saw this post a bit late but here is my 2c anyway.
The motor of the car in question is the splitting image of my 85 Euro with the M28/21 engine/transmission. The twin distributors is a dead giveaway!

Bryan, thanks for the info. I've been wondering what those ***** do...don't think mine work, but now I know what to look for. I agree, this car is and 85' euro. Nice to see that these cars are going for $12,000 + even if he did ruin it.
I must admit though I've joked about turning my white '85euro into a replica German police car. <anyone got any pictures?>

Looks like he sold it for 13k! The interior was identical to my U.S. 85 (except for the stereo improvement and steering wheel). The guy made no claim that it was originally yellow just that his mods makes it rare (I have to give him that). The interior does not match the paint job very well...
