Fender Flares
Whats the best way to flare the front fenders? My fenders rub on my 275/40/17 Victoracers during cornering or when I have 2 persons in the car. I know some slit the fender and weld in more aluminum, then take it to a body shop. Is that the best we can do? Don't want to pay big bux for Jaquemond stuff. This is a track car, want to keep cost$ down... any ideas?

Welding on the front fenders would be a good trick. You can try some advanced fiberglass work and attach a flare. It will not be an easy job trying to go around the prefab fender flares. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

At the moment I have bought some videos and how to books to make glass molds for fiberglass, maybe that is what I will have to do. Wondering if anybody knew of another approach or a bolt-on fender flare for the 928. Devek had them mentioned on their site for a while, but it was justa tease - they never produced them. Anybody know of any?

Check out the Koneig body kit on this website. The flares are LARGE and very aggressive. (the black one in the picture gallery)

Well, you could modify a set of flares from another car. Wheelwells are generally the same size. The main difference is the contours of the body. But even so, there is not a huge difference. I am guessing with a little blending, it could be done. I put on a set of fender flares on a 280Z back in the day. They were fairly inexpensive. Maybe they could be a starting point for your 928 flares...

Before you hack away, remember that aluminum is very malleable. You could hammerform flares into the fenders. At the same time, you could make them more round to look better.
There are tools and techniques to do this very professionally. Then you won't need any bondo...

I agree with Chris. Find a good body guy and ask him to hammer them out of your existing fenders. After all, you don't need much... the aluminum is soft and you can get what you need without making that much of a change. I know this can be done because I had a guy do it for me on a race car with steel fenders. He just took the fender, turned it upside down, put it on a bag of sand and started pounding. Made some really nice flares. We only had to use a bit of plastic to get them smooth enough to paint. It is a race car afterall. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

I run 275's up front on my track car with no rub. Do you have enough camber?
Also Dave Lloyd runs 275's and his car is very low with no rub. Maybe all you need is a fender roll, and not flares.

A friend of mine, who is very creative by the way, started out with a small piece of round wood. The piece of wood was approximately 1cm.(1/2 in) wider than clearing between wheel and fender and round in shape.
He then proceeded to wedge it in between wheel and fender from the rear and drive slowly forward.
Made a nice clearing between tire and fender without destroying the shape.

I call it rolled when the inner lip is crimped so the inner edge of the fender is smooth and doesn;t have a sharp edge. All 928GT's came from the factory with rolled fenders. Using the baseball bat (small piece of round wood) is what many used to flare the existing fenders.
I have only flared my rears to fit 315's. The 275's fit fine on the front with the roll.
