Broken motor mount?

Broken motor mount?
Has anyone had a motor mount physically break? Mine are bad, but I'm thinking they might be broken, haven't checked yet, doing the brakes. A friend of mine told me that if the mount is broken, it could make a clunking noise when accelerating from a stop, which mine does. Anyone have experience with this?

part of the motor mount hardware are two "safety hooks" which if the mount were to separate does limit the upward movement of the engine . More likely though is yours are collapsed fluid is gone and they are metal to metal ....

I agree with that Jim, I just have to figure out what the heck that frickin' clunk is! Sounds like something slamming into place, but doesn't happen when I accelerate slowly, only on moderate throttle.

Hmm, if I were you, I'd check the allen bolts on the half shafts. I took my car in to get the brake fluid flushed and SS brake lines put on, and all of those were barely hanging on. I didn't hear any noise though... Also, mine is coming from the back of the engine, or thereabouts. Hey Steve, does yours make the noise immediately upon moving? I can almost control mine; for me it clunks when I pass 1000rpm and the harder I hit the gas the quicker it happens. I've noticed it as late as 1500rpm, and as early as the car moves, oh and once it was very interesting. I was rolling backwards on a hill coming out of a driveway, and I hit the brakes with some force, and it clunked twice. What in the heck is that? The marble mechanics pen telling me it needs a refill on ink?

If your half shaft allen bolts are loose, and you have a slight vibration, stop...tighten them now. I put them off when I first noticed the vibration and then luckily while I was driving out of a driveway about 50 miles from nowhere, snap!! No more go!! It was the tow driver's lucky day. Keep checking them. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

To clarify that "luckily": I could have been doing what I have been known to sometimes do, rather than slowly drive out of a driveway. And if I had been going fast, the mess under the car with the axle flailing about would have been ugly.

I lock-tighted the half shaft bolts when I re-installed them after doing the CV / boot R&R. Lifted the car and checked them with a torque wrench and they were still tight, so it's not the axles. Tried to get it to clunk while lifted by revving a little in forward and reverse with the brakes on, but nothing. Only clunks when taking off from a stop - same as Barry. Resets on braking. This has baffled me for a year. If I ever figure it out I will post my findings. Thanks for the suggestions.

Wally, it sounds like its coming from the rear of the engine or close to, moreso on the passenger side. Could it be the thrust bearing or flex plate? Something is slamming into place, and now it clunks twice, and I had it do that when the car was rolling backwards downhill and I mashed the brakes, that was interesting... I'd really like to get this figured out though, because every time I drive the car I'm thinking, hmm will I get from A to B in one piece? I almost wish it would break though because then I'd at least know...
