In light of this, how much trouble is it to disconnect the drive axles on an 83 5-speed? I need to tow it approx 300 miles and dolleys are much cheaper than the full car hauler trailer from Uhaul.

Flat Bed would be your best bet to avoid any kind of damage or hitch wear?.

I bought my 928 140 miles from my house and towed it home using a rented full car hauler trailer from the local U-haul for about $50.00. I used my suburban tow vehicle. Worked like a charm.

BTW, with the high fenders on the trailer, I had to exit/enter the 928 through the hatch because I couldn't get the doors open very far at all.

I would spend the money for a full car trailer for the peace of mind.

DON'T!

The rear drive axles hold the rear wheel bearings together. The rear wheel bearings will almost certainly fail in 300 miles of loose operation.

Again:
Towing a 5-speed 928 with the rear wheels on the ground will not hurt the car.

Towing with a dolly is a more risky operation than towing on a good trailer.

A good trailer and a 928 will weigh 5000 pounds, which is enough to give SERIOUS stopping and handling problems with any light-duty towing vehicle, and with a heavy-duty one unless you have trailer brakes.

Towing a 928 on a two-wheel dolly with no brakes pulled by anything less than a 3/4 ton pickup, van or Suburban-style vehicle is REALLY "Risky Business".

U-haul, at least on their website, says that a 928 won't fit their hauing equipment. We know this is bunk, it;s been done before. It's looking like it'll just be cheaper to have it shipped.

I was going to use a 1994 Chevy Z71 if I towed it myself, but looks like that is out.

KBlair,

I have towed my 928 plenty of times on a car dolly with an F150. Back on the dolly and make sure the steering wheel is locked and braced so it can't move. I have also seen a 928 towed cross-country by another 928 with a hitch in this same manner.

Why not?

A Z.71 ought to be enough. I've seen 'em towing worse loads.

There's nothing in the mannual aginst it. The manual transmittion, and final drive should be safe enough. Do make sure that the muffler doesn't try to get a new angle too it. I belive there are toeing trailers that are low enough, just make sure your's is.

I'd say go for it.

Certainly a fully enclosed trailer, attached to something like a F-350 turbodeisle with a towing package would be better, but you can only work with what you've got.

I figure a Z 71 should hanndle the load. The 928 shouldn't be dammaged by the tow, assumeing the trailer is low enough. I'd say go for it. Keep your speed down, and drive realy conservitivly, just to be safe. And add extra tie downs and tie ons, just to be safe. Just don't make a habit of it. You realy don't want to have to do this more than once.

Why not?
