Tony has a good write up on his site also :Motor Mounts

I printed both his and John's instructions out and put them in a binder when I did mine.

Tony and John's websites give great info. Time estimates range from 4 to 12 hours. I'd figure 12 hours and make sure there aren't any young ears around because I think there may be cussing or at least some bad noises. The result is worth it and it gives great satisfaction. Might consider oil pan gasket and front shocks if these are a problem, since there is considerable overlap in labor.

Dave here helped me put things back together following a motor mount and oil pan gasket project. Could not have done it without him. So, in some small way, to pay it forward...

1. You may need a pal to help get the crossmember moved.
2. Yes, the starter has to come off.
3. If you have a 5-spd, be careful with the metal portion of the clutch line and the slave cylinder.
4. Pay heed to where all those bolts go.
5. There are some rectangular-headed bolts that stick down through the steering rack housing. If these fall out, don't be surprised.
6. The oil pan project, in my estimation, is more laborious that the motor mounts.
7. I got my replacement MM from Rog100. The difference in the car's ride is unbelievable; totally worth it.
8. Use your torque wrench at the end and tighten to specs. I did not practice what I preacheth here and had some rattling issues to diagnose.

Best of luck!

Tim

I did mine of the course of a week or so.. A couple hours each night. No real issues. Helps to have air tools! Actually it was kind of relaxing, laying on the creeper! Fell asleep a couple times! lol

Make that 3.5 hours to 12 hours to 2 days. My bro and I did mine in 3.5 hours, and that was swapping in solids for totally pancaked factory mounts. Helps to have two hands, a lift, and power/air tools (and a professional mechanic for a brother). Good luck!

Can you elaborate more on why? lifting the engine from above, the pan bolts that are difficult to access, or all of the above??
Thanks!

Mel,
The last 6 or 8 bolts are a real PITA and difficult to access.

ahh.... thats what I thought. But when I do my MM, its wise to do the oil pan gasket too yes?? My '85 has about 78k miles on it currently. I know I need MMs. The pan gasket has no leaks but know its suggested to replace it at the same time. I realize now though it would be a problem for me raising the engine if I cannot use jacks/block under the pan of course as I do not have an engine lift.

I know Roger knows this, but I'll just emphasize that this job alone justfies the purchase of a Gearwrench set. The 10mm Gearwrench actually makes short work of those 6 or 8 otherwise inaccessible pan bolts. I can't fathom how those bolts were removed quickly before the Gearwrench was invented. I tried a couple using a standard open end and it was a face at a time - in one case, a half of a face, flip the wrench over with it taking more than 30 minutes for one bolt. No wonder the book rate for this job is so long.

Kyle,

I think in another thread you said the pan gasket was recently done and is not leaking? So if you're just doing the motor mounts I'd say 6-8 hours depending on how many other things you do (like cleaning) WYAIT.

This job took me about 14 full hours including the pan gasket but my engine had about 1/2" of crud on every surface.

I would recommend cleaning whatever you can before you go in there so you don't get (as much) crud in your face while you're working on it.
+1 on the 10mm gear wrench (if you're doing the pan gasket), and if you pull the oil pressure sender, make sure you're ready to catch the little pieces along with a few ounce of oil. Print out the PET-6 diagram of this so you can reassemble it after the parts go all over your garage floor and under the table saw.

Lastly (again if you are doing the pan gasket), if you have the car on jack stands or lifted anything but completely level, you will have some extra oil in the rear of the pan that will spill down your elbows as you get that last bolt loose.

Good luck!
