I have just got the car back from the bodyshop. They have totally screwed the job up. Fortunately I haven't paid them yet. At present I am ready to kill someone.

Well, i ask around and get a well recommended bodyshop and get quoted a price. I must at this point say I never questioned the price so at no time did I say i wanted a knock down quick job. I explained that the car is a 'keeper and I want a good job'. We also discussed making sure it was done in clear over base as per factory finish not solid 2 pack.
I delivered the car and left a list of some small defects I noticed when I was taking glass, locks etc off the car.
So first off the boss goes on holiday and the car gets done while he's away. The car is painted in 2 pack. They don't do the bits I specifically asked for, the paint has defects in the roof, hood and wings. There are 2 minor dents in the car they haven't repaired just painted over, there is overspray on the inner plastic wheel arch liners and exhaust trims. They didn't mask the boot lock and the holes for the rear windscreen wiper so overspray has gone through these and got into the boot carpet.
There is more but its just pissing me off writing about it now.
I have written a letter to the boss (owner) asking him what he intends to do to put it right and how pissed I am. I'll let you know what he says monday when I hear from him.

Mike, FWIW, you can always be pissed off later. It's usually most effective to approach the owner as if he will be upset with what his workers have done and want to set it right.
If you approach him as the enemy he will probably assume the position and you will have to fight him every step of the way to get satisfaction.
Even when we're wrong, we need a little benefit of the doubt, to allow room to make things right.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Aways sucks when shops don't do things properly or how you asked them to do it.

what year is your car? I think most 928's are single stage paint FYI. GTS's are another story

but if you are repainting and want 2 stage base clear and you asked for it then you should have gotten it.

I think it is the color that determines 1 or 2 stage paint. Not the year.

Mike I am sorry to hear this, where are you -- England or Aus or SA? It really is hard to find a good painter and like lawyers and doctors, you don't actually KNOW till it's too late. I recommend Charley's approach, he knows what he's talking about. Also, paint is sometimes clearcoated depending on the colour. Bit this is a massive mess. If I were you I'd have them fix everything to the best of their abilities; including the carpet, and walk away and never look back.
Been there myself. All you can do now is save yourself a) money and b) anguish

This is how I understand the paint system. On the early cars the solid colors were single stage, the metalic colors are all two stage - base and clear.

The red cars going all the way up to the GTS are single stage.

I am not sure when Porsche started clearing solid colors, but it was probably with the 87. Black and white can have clear coats.

If you have pearl paint, then it is three stage. A base coat, the intermediate coat with the pearl and a clear coat.

You can determine if your car has a clear coat easily enough. Take some compound and polish a section. If the rag picks up the color of the paint then it is a single stage if not then it has a clear coat.

German paints in the 1980s had serious problems with clear coats lasting. Common to German cars in the 1970-80s to see the clear coat separate and craze on the hoods and roofs. If you are planning on painting over an older clear coat job - especially from the factory you will have to strip the paint to get a good job.

Any bad paint job is repairable to perfection unlike, for example, some bodywork repairs where you might have to accept an economic or technical compromise and NEVER get it right. If you have paid nothing you are in an even stronger position.

If this problem causes symptoms of "incredible depression" you should probably get help.

I can't tell you how many US and Japanese cars I've seen with this. Ford Taurus seems to be particularly affected by this problem...
