Water Pump installation question
Hi all,
I'm in the process of installing a rebuilt Porsche water pump. The water pump does not slide over the two dowel pins easily. I made sure the water pump cleared the rear timing belt guard.
It seems like some gentle persuasion is needed to seat the water pump on the block. I haven't taken a rubber mallet to it yet.
Is is normal?
Thanks,
Adam

If everything is lining up, then use the rubber mallet; there may be paint from the rebuild in the holes for the dowel pins.

Mine took a little persuasion as well but it was more alignment. Take a measurement across the dowel pins and compare to WP alignment holes. It is possible to have the pump out of alignment a hole, and then end up frustrated from trying to install an alignment pin in a hole meant for a bolt. Ask me how I know.... on the third try just make sure you're lined up right.

Thank you for the advice! I'll check the dowel pin hole alignment. I also take emory cloth to the dowel pins again and clean out the dowel pin holes in the water pump. I don't want to pound the water pump on knowing I'll be replacing again in the future.
Hopefully this will do it.
Thanks,
Adam

The water pump is in. I cleaned the dowel pins and the corresponding holes in the water pump again. I applied a little silver anti-seize to the pins as they are steel and the water pump is aluminum. I lined up the pins, put a 1/4" drive 10mm socket over the pin area and gently tapped the socket with a rubber mallet. All it took was a couple of taps on each side and the water pump was flush to the block.

Hi - I'm using sealant with the gasket. I used (dare I say it here) Hondabond HT high temp silicone sealant. It's made specifically for aluminum components (non-acidic formula). RTV can be caustic and react with aluminum parts - check the label carefully on your RTV.

IMHO, I would not use sealant on this gasket. Clean the surface really well, apply gasket and be done. 3 for 3.
