The asking price is $7000, so I think that the owner is being fairly realistic, and it could be bought for about $500-$1000 less...
Please show me a running 928 for $4000...in average condition...

my 82 was 500.00 and it had a rebuilt trans, timing belt and water pump replacement months before I bought it. It did need a new throwout bearing before I could drive it. Of course it needs paint and interior work but it is all there and I was looking for a "tinker project" to stay out of my wifes hair. Took my 6-8 months to find the one I liked, I passed on several that were in really bad shape.

To me, OB means Old Bugger. Any pre-32v car.

Terms like "average" cars and "average" prices amuse me. With only a few very notable exceptions, --all-- 928's that come on the market are somewhere in the "average" range. Sometimes there's a "divorce forces sale" bargain for a perfectly-maintained garage queen with impeccable pedigree, maintained on a platinum Amex account with Greg Brown. After that, it's all a balancing game with what your standards are for cosmetics vs. the way the car presents, the current maintenance situation vs. the half-life of items on the PM list, the list of instant fixes needed, etc. Oh, and the budget. First-year costs of ownership should be the yardstick. If you decide to baseline a long list of due or even near-due maintenance items on a 928, it can pretty easily get to $5k and often go well beyond that. Got cosmetic challenges to go with that? Another $1k for carpet, another $1k for seat refurb, another $1k for dash and pod replace. That's on top of the TB/WP/shocks/brakes/tires/engine bay rubber/door trim/window guides/trans service/torque tube bearings/ball joints/alignment/filters and fluids all/washer plumbing/battery/radio & speakers/etc $5k+ that most "average" cars are soon due for when they are on the market.
Just my observations of course. There are exceptions, and those are the cars we are all hunting for I guess.

Just an update...
What a disappointment. The car was owned by a very pleasant gentleman, living in a very affluent area...
Usually, cars owned in affluent areas are pristine...as money is less of an issue.
The car, was poor at best. There was surface rust around the back window. Paint faded. Carpet worn through. Motor with surface rust pretty much everywhere. Radiator looked corroded. Tires worn...
This was a car that was likely used as a daily driver. There were bills for thousands recently... It was a nice $2500 car. I just didn't have the heart to say that. Basically said the car wasn't for me...
Thank you everyone for your input. One man's "excellent" is another mans "cr*p."

Welcome to the world of buying a 928.
The best bargain I have seen come and go in a VERY long time was Keith's '82. What a beauty!
Good luck in your search. Nice cars ARE out there.
