Thoughts on this 928?
I haven't been on this board in about 6 years, but would appreciate folks thoughts on a particular 928.
1982, auto, red/tan, 100,000...same owner for 25 years. Apparantly had a "major tuneup", timing belt, water pump very recently. Described as "excellent."
The same owner for 25 years is definitely a plus. I will be looking at the car today.
Before I tell everyone the price, what do you figure this car is worth in good, and in excellent condition? I keep reading posts on here where folks are buying 928's for $5000 or less, but I haven't run across those. Most of the ones I have seen are $10,000 or so.
I currently own a 914, and have had 944's/911s/996/boxsters in the past. But this would be my first 928.
Any thoughts on value appreciated. Any thoughts on this particular model year also apprciated.

I know you know. Valuing a car based on someone else's words is third hand at best. To me (more subjectivity) a nice '82 is worth $7,500 tops. I know it's worth more to others. Have the original ball joints been replaced?
The equalizer in these cars is that the smile on new '82 owner's face is identical to the one on a new GT owner's face.

Reportedly the ball joints have been replaced.
I will see the car today, and have realistic expectations.
It difficult to find a 1-2 owner car, and for me that has a lot of value. Usually a 1-2 owner car has been extremely well taken care of.
Most of the 928's I see in the midwest look like crap, with 10+ owners, parked outside, with lots of wear and tear.
I don't have a recent issue of Excellence around, but I thought they were saying that the "early" 928's are starting to move up in value. Hard to see how they could go much lower. Even the 914's have spiked up a bit. I am not looking for an "investment", but its nice to know the cars aren't depreciating further...
If the tb/wp/ball joints have been replaced, thats probably 2500$ worth of recent maintenance...
Any other thoughts?

I think thats also a 3 spd at car with about 218hp... your 914 off the line would give it a run for the money. (IMO) If it is REALLY nice and I mean REALLY nice WAY above average. No dash cracks... no seat rips. the consol not all ripped up, carpets still looking good... I could see 10K But Im talking REALLY nice. The price will drop VERY QUICKLY from here..... If it is an average 82, 3500-4000. IMO

Well, it could still need braking system, gaskets, hoses, plugs, plug wires, shocks ect. all these things could be in the next month, year, 2 years whatever. Some people dump the car when faced with big $$ repairs, the TB is just the most talked about. Hopefully lots of documentation and the PPI is a good thing, but not foolproof (things will appear later).
I've had 2 OB's and you need to understand 25 + yr old cars have parts that don't want to come off easily
Bottom line in my mind is that the $$ is worth it to keep a good OB going, just try to get in cheap on a decent car and expect to do some $$ repairs in the future.

Where are you guys finding 928's for $4000??? The local autotrader/cars.com starts at $7000 and works its way up. Average ask about $9000-$12000. Now, I know asking and selling prices are a world apart, but talking an owner down $6000 on a car isn't going to happen.
The asking price is $7000, so I think that the owner is being fairly realistic, and it could be bought for about $500-$1000 less...
Please show me a running 928 for $4000...in average condition...

If you've already decided that talking an owner down to $6000 isn't going to happen then you've already lost the negotiation. Whose side are you on anyway, yours or the sellers?

I would guess that an 82 US model AT in good condition, maintained records could be worth 7-10K. Not too hard to imagine at all. It ought to be VERY nice though. Having said that the service spent on the car, if documented is great but $2500 for a TB/WP should not be adjusted in the cars price too heavilly, it is something that needs to be done to ALL 928's, 944's 968's you get the picture. It is like changing tires and/or break pads. They all need it at some point. Also the price for the job can vary, me and a few buddies can do it for the price of parts and an afternoon in the garage, so you can't value labor into the price.
The problem is that it is an 82 US automatic. Low HP, not a manual, and well, quite a few others out there for the same price or less.
You would probubly be better off looking for a $10-15K S4 with the same history as your 82 if you could, just more bang for the buck IMO

I will of course try to negotiate, but when its already the cheapest 928 listed in the area, and the condition "sounds" good...I am just being realistic...
Does anyone have the recent Excellence update on 928's? If it shows that the 82 is worth around $5000...that would help in negotiations...
The auto is actually a plus. My other cars are stick, and my wife refuses to drive them. This would be an occasional cruiser, and hopefully she could enjoy it too. She loves the 914 more than any car I have ever owned...and wants me to get an "automatic" 914 .
Any help appreciated, and I thank all of you for the input

I can tell you that $4000 buys you a rusted out 944 with $150,000 miles and a cracked windshield...in the midwest...

I had a 1982 auto that was about as good as it gets short of low mileage/collector/concours' car. Loved it, spent many $1000's, it was a bear to get ANYONE to step up to the plate to purchase it close to $10K. It was worth every bit of $15K and probably way more, BUT, that doesn't matter if no one is paying it. I sold the car for $8500.00. The buyer got a fantastic deal. The best thing you can do is bring another 928 owner with you who knows the cars well to give it a good PPI. There is a whole lot more to know that just throwing you a price of something we know nothing about.

I sold a 87 S4 (black one in avatar) that needed work but was a solid driver for $7200. Recent t-belt waterpump done. Was no garage queen by any means but was a graet everyday driver that had normal wear for the age. I have seen some 928's go for $4k, the older OB syle but even some of those are "rat bags" in my opinion. So to answer your question $4k does not buy you much interms of a "nice" 928. I agree a low mileage, low owner, original car in excellent condition comands a premium. Shoot your talking about spending $7k on a car that cose close 40k back in 82.
